I have been a student at a 4-year university out of state and currently have 48 semester units. I am moving to San Diego next month and will be enrolling at a CCC to finish up some required courses and the remaining units. I'm applying as a transfer for Fall '14 at a bunch of UC campuses.

I have been looking into IGETC and am only 5 courses shy of certification. Do I need to be enrolled at a CCC for a certain amount of time to be eligible for IGETC? I called the transfer center at the CC I'll be attending and the woman said it isn't a program you get accepted into, so there is no such thing as eligibility. This seems a little questionable to me, since it is obviously only through CCCs. If I take 18 credits at a CCC this upcoming year can I do IGETC? I need to know so I can figure out which courses to register for.

IGETC is not a program you get into. If you complete the classes that are required for IGETC, then you become IGETC certified, but there is no program that you sign up for to do this. You simply ask the CCC to say that you have completed IGETC.

I’m fairly certain about what I’m about to say, but I wouldn’t bet my life on it. You don’t have to take all of the IGETC classes at the CCC you’re attending; some from the 4-year you went to should transfer. You’ll have to see a counselor about that.

Just make sure you have copies of your sealed official transcripts to submit to your CC, then make an appt with a counselor to talk about how your current units match up with classes for IGETC certification, and to make sure that that classes you have left to complete are planned accordingly.

With completion of the necessary remaining classes, you will be on track for certification of IGETC at your CC.

Another thing to remember if you took a foreign language in high school, that can satisfy the IGETC requirement, so you might want to get an official copy of your HS transcripts before you move.

I was actually just looking into that last night. The requirement is two years of Spanish with nothing below a C- in the final term, I believe? Is there any requirement about grades throughout the two years, or just the successful completion with an adequate grade at the end? I had a rough few years in high school, particularly with Spanish, and then seriously turned things around in college. I was so relieved to find out the UC system doesn’t require high school transcripts until after you are admitted.
