Hi, quick question. I took Spanish 1 in freshman year in high school Got D's both semesters. Took spanish 2 my sophomore year got D's both semesters. Retook Spanish 2 in Junior year in junior year and got B's for both semesters. Then I took Spanish 3 my Senior year and got a C- and a D+ for both semesters. I asked my admissions office and various counselors and they said I should be fine for IGETC Certification. Are they correct?

Help? …

I’m not an expert or anything, but I’m think that D’s don’t count onto your college transcript. If I were you I’d take an intro foreign language course at your CC to be safe.

yeah I don’t think the D’s satisfy anything

I was told because I got a B in Spanish 2 that I should be fine because it overrides Spanish 1…

If these admissions counselors are the same ones who will be filling out and certifying your IGETC, then you should be fine. (If they weren’t the ones, what you should do is find and ask those who will be filling it out – they are the authority and their answer will be official.)

I’ve done Spanish 3 years worth and got 1 D in there, but I’m sure I’ll be safe, hope you do as well man.

You need to get a C- throughout 2 years (which in your case would be 4 semesters). Even ignoring the first year two years, since you got a a D+ in your 4th semester (Span 3), you’re not technically fulfilling the requirement. Even your average from your whole year in Spanish 3 isn’t a C-.

The Foreign Language requirement for IGETC may be met in one of the following ways:

Satisfactory completion of two years of high school coursework in a Language Other Than English (LOTE), with a grade of C- or better in each course. Two years must be in the same language.

Eh, i think I’ll be fine. i’ll go in tomorrow. I’ve spoken to about 4 different counselors and theyve all said the same thing same with admissions.

Your community college counselors told you that it was okay that you didn’t have a C- average for EACH year? Surprise, surprise lol. But FYI it’s not a cumulative C- average over the 2 years. Personally I would speak with the UC admissions before you go ahead and assume that you’re fine :)

killmyentourage lets put aside Spanish 3 for a second. I think you’re incorrect. If I had gotten a B in Spanish 1 but a D in Spanish 2 than it wouldn’t be satisfied. But because Spanish 2 is the continuation of Spanish 1, getting B’s in Spanish 2 nullifies my D’s in Spanish 1. If i’ve spoken to this many school officials about it I think I should be confident.

I’m not talking about Spanish 1 or the first time you took Spanish 2.

Your grades for 2nd try at Spanish 2: B and B (average higher than C-)
Your grades for Spanish 3: C- and D+ (average not higher than a C-)

Hopefully your CC overlooks this since it’s so close, but I’m just telling you that they might not because you’re not technically fulfilling the requirement. A C- and a D+ average somewhere below a C-.

What’s the standard percentage for a D+? 67-69.999? For C-? its like 70-72?

That differs among schools. Did your HS grade in percentages?

I’m not saying you have no chance, they might say it’s no big deal and certify you. But if they don’t, this is why. If your transcript says a D+, that’s technically below a C- no matter if it’s only .0001%

No. So how would you average those out? This is just interesting to me because literally everytime ive gone in to speak to a counselor to double check my IGETC they tell me that I’ve satisfied this requirement because Ive taken Spanish 2.

It’ll just be somewhere between a C- and a D+. Community college counselors are wrong a LOT of the time. They might have glanced at it or they don’t really know the IGETC specifics (hard to believe but it’s true). Like someone mentioned above, they’re the ones who are certifying you so they may not really care and you’ll be fine.

The good news is that if you do happen to have to take foreign language again, you only need one semester.

thanks alot

I took German for 3 years but got 1 D in my German 2 but after that I’ve gotten B’s in German 3 would that affect me any differently?

Probably not provided that your German 1 grades average out to at least a C-. I don’t think there would be a problem even if the 2 years weren’t consecutive.

yeah both German 1 and 3 are better than C- average so I guess that is a sigh of relief for me then. Thanks entourage.
