IGETC Foreign Language Requirement...P/NP

How will taking foreign languages Pass/No Pass affect chances for UCLA Econ? Big no no?

I’d also like to learn about foreign language as pass/no pass, but instead of UCLA econ, I was thinking along the lines of pharm/med/whatever.

Revelle at UCSD has that 4 quarters of foreign language req, so I was thinking about 3 quarters at CC and 1 quarter there.

I didnt even take any Foreign Language class in my cc but use my SAT CHinese score to fulfill this requirement. however, the more p/np u get from ur class the lower the chance u will admit to the best UC… if u have taken any foreign language course in highschool, u can always use them to fulfill ur foreign language requirement.

A P/NP on the foreign language requirement is fine and won’t affect you negatively in any manner. The only instance where a P/NP is not recommended or possibly restricted is any foundational class in your major. There are also restrictions on Bio and Engineering majors that require a ‘B’ or better therefore a P/NP does not qualify. It does not look bad to take a entire year of foreign language P/NP. It is only an institutional requirement and only formally has to be completed unless went a California High School and took at least a year there so as to waiver that requirement.

It is absolutely untrue that taking P/NP classes will lower ones chances of getting into a more competitive UC. The condition is a student is allowed on average 12-20 units to transfer and obtain a bachelors degree depending on the institution. Just like the condition that you can only transfer around 70-75 semester (105-115 quarter) units max from a cc towards a bachelors. One can still take more classes beyond that even P/NP and still will count towards course completion and is certainly not used against a student. All they do is go down the line on what you have completed and your final passing grade and cross out what you didn’t complete with a passing grade. They understand not everybody is going to be great at every subject nor do they expect them to be. Unless foreign language is part and parcel of your major no CSU or UC from the admin to departmental level is going to care one bit completing the foreign language institutional requirement P/NP. If anything, they will think you are intelligent and being honest for picking those classes P/NP if there was a chance they may effect your overall GPA.

If you haven’t used up transferable P/NP classes already and close to transferring then I’d recommended going for it.
