Hi there, anyone could help me on this!
I graduated high school oversea, in China. how to fulfill IGETC #6 foreign language requirement? I wanted to take AP exam, however there is not any coordinator available around me!
Please help

I’m not sure it your HS class counts, but I think it should since it was a foreign language. I would ask a counselor at your current school to double check. If it doesn’t count then you could take a 5 unit Chinese class in one semester to fulfill the requirement.

Here is a copy of the IGETC agreement for Santa Monica College:

MEETING FOREIGN LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT (UC ONLY)
The Foreign Language requirement for IGETC may be met in one of the following ways:
- Satisfactory completion of two years of high school coursework in a Language Other Than English (LOTE), with a grade of C- or better in each course. Two years must be in the same
language. - Satisfactory completion of a course (or courses) at a college or university with a grade of C or better in each course.
- Satisfactory completion, with C grades or better, of two years formal schooling at the sixth grade level or higher in an institution where the language of instruction is not English.
- Satisfactory score of the SAT II: Subject Test in Languages Other Than English (LOTE).
- Satisfactory score, 3 or higher, on the College Board Advanced Placement (AP) Examinations in Languages Other Than English (LOTE).
- Satisfactory score, 5 or higher, on the International Baccalaureate (IB) Higher Level Examinations in Language Other Than English (LOTE).
- Satisfactory completion of an achievement test administered by a community college, university, or other college in a Language Other Than English (LOTE).
- Language Other Than English “O” Level Exam with a grade of A, B or C.
- Language Other Than English International “A” Level Exam with a score of 5, 6 or 7.
- A Defense Language Institute Language Other Than English course which is indicated as passed with a C or higher on the official transcript. Before May 1995, use 1st score; if taken after May 1995 use 2nd score:
Chinese with listening: 500/520 German/German with listening: 500/510 Italian: 500/520 Korean/Korean with listening: /500 French/French with listening: 500/540 Hebrew (Modern): 500/470 Japanese with listening: 500/510 Latin: 500/530

The easy way to do it would be to take a placement test in your native language to at your current school. It should be free or near free and a lot easier than taking say the SAT II for a language. Check your IGETC sheet for your school and speak to a counselor.

Hope that helps.

Hey I am from China too. At my community college, I just need to show my school that I had over 2 years studying a foreign language (Chinese) and got at least a C. I bring by High school transcript to muy school councilor and let them approved for my. In my official transcript in my community college, it stated one the top column that I passed foreign language requirement for IGETC. No sure if every school do it at the same way but if you cannot fulfill it, you can take foreign language class at you college to fulfill it. Hope this help my Chinese friend:)

My school is on the semester system and the language classes are only 4 not 5 units. Does this mean that I will will need to take two classes, such as FREN 401 AND FREN 402? 401 is the basic elementary french class and 402 is the continuation of that.

Look at the course description in the course catalog. If it says equivalent to two years of HS then it satisfies IGETC. For me it was Spanish 50 and it was 5 units. I thought I hand to take the next class which is Spanish 51 but when I read the course description I found that each course was equal to two years of HS Spanish so I only needed to take Span 50. Also check out assist.org and look at IGETC requirements for your CC.

So I’m curious: I took 2 years for French in HS. I got A’s in French 1 and a B first semester of French 2, but a D second semester. Seriously was the teacher. That was also the ONLY D I received in HS.

Anyways, I’m not in Community College (but am thinking about it), and I understand the above shows I am ineligible to apply to a UC, but would I be able to take 1 language class at a CC for a letter grade and use that along with my previous language grades to apply to UCs as a Freshman candidate? Would I need to take a quarter/semester of French 2 equivalent, or could I take the level 1 course for a completely different language?

Thanks!

^^ Yes, you can do that but beware. Language classes in CC/4 year uni’s will be ALOT more challenging than high school.

As for the international students, if I am not mistaken, you can use english as your language requirement if your first language is not english. Since you will need english anyways, it might be a little easier to go this direction.

So theoretically (obviously I’d call the specific UC that I’d apply to to verify) I would be able to take a French 2 equivalent OR another language class at CC worth 4-5 qtr units and use that along with my HS grades for the LOTE requirement and apply for Fall 2013 (assuming I finish the class/es by application time)?
