IGETC UCB L&S Confusion

Okay, in my CCC, foreign languages have this type of sequence: 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B.

It says taking up Spanish 1A would satisfy the IGETC. I looked on assist and it said 1B would satisfy the FL requirement of UCB.

To get in L&S, it's written that one should satisfy Reading, FL, and quantitative reasoning to be eligible for admission. And at the end, it says that IGETC would satisfy all requirements.

I even emailed L&S about it, and they said yes, IGETC will satisfy everything.

That means if I take Spanish 1A and finish all the IGETC requirements, I have satisfied all the requirements, right?

Same goes with finishing 1B, and taking specific courses for the other requirements, right?

So, am I on the safe side by finishing a 1A foreign language class + IGETC or should it be 1B + IGETC?

Okay they said I should email admissions as well. I emailed and now waiting for the reply.

From What I know, each CCC has different requirements for their IGETC, but at CCC that I’m attending the Spanish 1A fulfills the FL area. As a result, I don’t need to take Spanish 1B to receive the IGETC certificate. By the way, I’m applying to Cal too, and I think receiving IGETC would satisfy the lower-division requirement for college of L&S at Cal. However, you should definitely double check with Cal undergrad admission to clarify what they actually ask.

Good Luck with your application iZychr

you EITHER fulfill IGETC or the L&S general ed breadth. so if you have IGETC, you don’t need 1b, although I guess it could help you look stronger. As in 1b as an elective looks better than 4 units of swimming or something.

Meh, I’m originally from abroad and I thought my HS there would satisfy my IGETC LOTE requirement. My cheap CCC (CCCC lol) doesn’t have the language I studied in my 4 years of HS, and they will NOT do a darn thing to get this requirement out of my way.

@CantabilenApathy
Do you think they would still make me take Spanish 1B (the equivalent) if I successfully transfer?

Wait, you mean to say taking 1B WILL affect admissions?

No you don’t have to take any GE once you transfer. That’s what IGETC is for- the different UCs and especially CSUs vary a little with GE so it’s unrealistic to expect every applicant to satisfy all of the school’s GE requirements. IGETC is a replacement for the L&S Breadth Requirements. So again, you don’t have to satisfy L&S Breadth now or later as long as you are IGETC certified.

As 1B affecting admissions, I was just commenting that taking difficult classes obviously looks better than satisfying IGETC and then getting As in underwater basket weaving. So if you like Spanish, or if you think it’ll be easy, it’s a solid class to have on your transcript. In no way is it necessary. Just think about- applicant A took 2+ semesters of a language even though they didn’t have to, and applicant B took ceramics or intro to the library. Which one looks stronger?

Good point. Though I do think taking an extra class somewhat related to your major would sound better.

Thanks for the details! This cleared things on my mind.

We have the same situation dude. Are you planning to finish 1B then?
