Illegal Course Repeat

I'm a student at UCI and have run into a bit of an issue with my academic counselors in terms of a so-called illegal course repeat.

I took two equivalent math courses; one here at UCI in the Spring quarter (Math 2A) and another a few years back at El Camino Community College (Math 190). I got a D in Math 190 but an A in Math 2A.

When I got the units transferred over here to UCI, I only got elective units because of that grade of "D". I eventually wanted to switch into the Economics major and one of the requirements was Math 2A. Since I only got elective credit for Math 190, I was told to take Math 2A in the Spring quarter of '08, so I did and I aced it.

Fast forward to a few days ago: my academic counselor notifies me that I won't be receiving credit for Math 2A because I already received credit for Math 190. ***? So they essentially told me that if I wanted to change majors, I would have had to have taken Math 2A but not receive credit for it. That doesn't sound right, does it?

Another thing that bugs me is that I thought you had to get a grade of C or higher to have the class satisfy a particular breadth requirement or be able to substitute it for a class. In my case since I got a D that obviously didn't apply, and so I only received Elective credit. Everything was showing up correctly in my degree audit until my counselor manually made some "Exceptions" and other changes on it: (it used to show up properly as me getting elective credit for Math 190 and full credit for Math 2A.)

And what's the deal with this illegal repeat? My counselor said I can't receive credit for Math 2A because I took Math 190 at an earlier date. Um, what if I took the class here at UCI, got a D, and then retaken it? That's not considered an illegal repeat, so why is this?

Bottom line: I think my counselor screwed up. I think I should be receiving elective units for Math 190 and full credit for Math 2A. I've already emailed the associate dean for them to look into this, but does this sound right?

(I also spoke with the associate dean very briefly on the phone and they said that in this case, the registrar's computers would automatically detect any course overlaps (ie. Math 190 satisfying Math 2A). However, my counselor went in and manually changed up my Degree Audit - there was nothing "automatic" about it. The computers never detected it and I'm confident that it's because I got a D in Math 190, which gave me only elective units.)

So does it sound like I might be able to get full credit for Math 2A? I would really like the A I got in it to factor into my GPA

first off, the computers not detecting anything carries little weight. the whole reason for manual changes is because of exceptions to the rules (as this case seems to be).

secondly, and more importantly, even if you did get course credit for math 190, the fact that it is a D means it cannot apply to your major, so you would have to retake it for your major.
if it is an illegal repeat, it means (i tihnk) that you can complete a degree in economics, most of the sciences/engineering and anything else that requires math 2a- and that just wouldnt go.

they should reverse it, however they may decide to let both grades stand on your transcript (so you average the GPA) instead of just replacing it.

this sounds like something that just needs to be worked out with a lot of red tape. it could be a while.
