Im a little scared

Im a highschool junior in a California highschool and I'm kind of scared about my grades. I just had my finals and barely discovered what my grades were.
The classes im taking and the grades I got are:
AVID-A
AP Environmental-A
Spanish3-4- A
Ap Us history- B
Ap English and composition-D
Calculus-A

I've been slacking off this year and the D I got for AP eng is making my worry about my transcript and what future colleges are going to think. Will this affect my chances in getting accepted to UCs. I'm freaking out!!

Well, yes, it will affect your chances of admission to UCs. All of your grades- As, Bs, Cs and so on- affect your chances. A D on your transcript is rather ugly, but it doesn’t have to be the nail in the coffin (especially since you’re only a junior). You still have your senior year to maintain success in class.

I’m not going to lie; that D strongly diminishes your odds of being admitted to the most prestigious UCs like UCLA, Berkeley, and San Diego. But if you are generally well-rounded and have other things going for you, you still have hope of being accepted to these schools.

^ my advice is too retake the class next year (if that is an option) to replace the grade first semester.

I don’t know what that person up there is talking about, “youre only a junior” Fall applications to the UCs are due Dec. 15 so you only have one more semester (2nd semester junior year to bring your grades up) and that D is horrendous.
You should be scared.
The good news is, that D is not really going to matter at all in comparison to a very high SAT score. If you’re a CA resident and able to score in the median or higher for the UC you want you should be fine, your other grades are good.

it will effect it, but if you keep your test scores up and apply yourself senior year it will help a lot

I’m sorry if I was wrong about the application deadline. I just assumed the application was due in January or February, as is the case with most universities I know of. In that case, there is more reason to be concerned.

But, let’s not forget that one doesn’t necessarily have to apply as a senior. This person could take a gap year and then submit an application after he/she has completed high school.

A D on your transcript for a UC is not a good thing. You should retake the class. Also make sure you meet the A-G requirements which includes 4 years of English. A course in which you got a D does not count towards the requirements, and unless you meet all the A-G requirements you are going to be denied admission.
