I'm a really happy mom...

After touring a bunch (8) east coast schools in April, dd and I did Macalester, Grinnell and Carleton this past week. At the end she decided Carleton is her first choice so she's going to apply ED. I'm an active alum, (she really tried to find fault, but....) and as an added bonus she'll be on my reunion cycle:)

Her grades are great and her SATs were great except CR was at the low end of the Carleton range. We got the new scores today and she got 800 CR. Her total superscore is 2360, so she's pretty stoked (ok, I am too). I keep reminding her that everywhere is competitive and nothings certain. She says there are several schools that she would be happy at, so she won't be devastated if she doesn't get in. But.... I can't help feeling that she will and I'll be really dissappointed if she doesn't. I'll just have to come here to cry and then cheer her on.

Well, guess I'll have to put this out of my mind for 6 mos. Maybe I should stop spending so much time on CC, LOL

I just had a fabulous 30th reunion - who knew I had such interesting classmates:) Of course 30 years ago they hadn't done so many cool things.
Hope everyone's having a great summer.

Oh, what could be better! I'm betting she'll sail right in, though one never knows for sure. (I had one waitlisted two years ago at Carleton, while the other was accepted last year.) Good luck!

It sounds like a good chance for her, Bingle. The only thing I would suggest is an EA or rolling school for her just in case, just in case, she is deferred, Friend of mine's daughter should have been an "in" at Barnard, but she was deferred ED. It was a true shock to them (she did get in RD). Had she had an accept in hand then it would have mitagated the pain somewhat. With so many kids applying early these days, those kids who only applied to one school early and got deferred, feel pretty lousy. It's just not a good way to go into the holiday season. Also suggest getting all those apps done and ready to go before getting the news. Nothing like doing apps under the pall of a deferral during the holiday season when your friends are out footloose and fancy free. Son had a few friends in that situation, and it was not good. Those kids who had acceptances early and were just doing reaches were in a pretty good mood, but those who were working in uncertainty really felt bad.

Good idea, but I'm not sure if any schools she's interested in have EA. I guess I just need to dig through the websites.

I posted in the parents forum thread, not realizing you're an alum! I've been fascinated with how many people on various Carleton lists are shown as alums and parents.

Who was the president of Carleton 30 years ago?

My husband and I are also Carleton alums. (Robert Edwards was president 30 years ago!) I just want to throw my two cents in that I do think it’s a good idea to apply ED. Our son—with all the typical great stats--was waitlisted at Carleton four years ago, and that was with two alumni parents and his older sister a current student. The college didn’t go to the waitlist that year and he ended up at Grinnell—great school, happy ending—but Carleton’s decision was tough to take and we never really understood it. I wonder sometimes if applying ED might have made the difference.

Yeah Mary, it seems to be a mystery. Grinnell is a close second, so maybe d will end up there:)

Bob Edwards had just started 30 years ago; Howie Swearer was there my first 3 years and then went to Brown.
