I'm an international student. What are my chances of ivy league or other top universities?

I'm an international student. What are my chances of ivy league and other top colleges with the following scores

SAT1 :CR: 570
Math:740
Writing:560

SAT2: Math2 800
Physics:800
Chem:790

TOEFL iBT: 111
I'm most likely gonna answer AP's

With those SAT 1 scores, unfortunately, pretty much 0%

Almost nonexistent given your SAT score. Increase your SAT score to 2200+, have a 4.0 (or close to) GPA and you’ll have a chance. More importantly, most top universities are need-aware admission for international students, meaning even if you are qualified, you won’t be admitted unless you can pay for the majority of your education out of pocket.

I disagree with the above. Since you’re international the CR and writing are much less considered than your Math which is very good. Your subject tests are also excellent. And your TOEFL balances the english part of your SAT for proof of proficiency.

Most people on this forum regard internationals the same way they consider americans. Big mistake. Internationals are not selected by the same offices as regular americans. And why ? because the criterias are different. They aknowledge english is not your first language, and that you have been educated in a different system than the american system.

If you have interesting EC’s, and show some originality compared to other applicants, you’ll get into very good schools, don’t worry about that.

@meriks while a TOEFL score can be used to show English proficiency, most top Unis still require an SAT score and anything below a 2100 is pretty much out of the question. Furthermore, most international students for top schools have a 120 (or close to it) TOEFL score.

And as I mentioned before, admission is need-aware so if OP requires financial aid, chances are even lower.

I agree that being full pay helps but i disagree with the rest.

Admissions are holistic. 120 toefl ? Look at the percentiles, almost no one scores that. 111 is already excellent.

And what do you consider top Unis ? If he wants to major in engineering, Purdue is an excellent university, and admits tons of internationals with sub 2000 scores, as long as the math is good.

There are other schools other than HYPSM that are very good schools.

well i’m not applying to purdue, but I am pretty confident of having interesting essays.

How much of an impact can the essays create? (I ask in the hope that they can make up for the poor SAT English scores)

Purdue was just an example. Essays can have some impact, but i don’t believe they are game changers.

So are MIT, Caltech, Cornell, Stanford, Penn State, Columbia,Harvey Mudd are all lost from my side?

If you can afford Penn state, you have very good chances. But i guess you meant Upenn.

The rest are very tough yes. MIT is the hardest for internationals.
What is your intended major ?

Private schools are harder than public schools for internationals because they are less need aware

EECS electrical and computer science. But I intend to go into astrophysics and cosmology, end up as a theoretical
physicist

I’m most likely gonna not take aid. What about recs, if you have a columbia alum as your rec then?
but if things don’t work out I’ll go for the IIT’s here in India

Ok, you should definitely consider purdue with those majors,

so did you mean Penn state or Upenn ?

upenn

you should also consider UIUC

i have but am not too sure

Yeah well, Upenn is same league as the others. Look at University of illinois Urbana champaign, Purdue, UT austin, for good programs where you have signifcantly more chances. Are you full pay ?

not too sure… but if it guarantees admission in any top college then maybe yes
