Talents and Awards
- hmm... none I can think of other than the ones listed above.
- I've been playing violin for the past 9 years
- I've written a novel

Other
- I maintain a part-time job during the school year, working about 15hrs a week.
- I lifeguard full-time during the summer, while still maintaining the part time job.

AP/IB Coursework
- AP English Language 3
- IB Theatre Arts 5
- The rest of my IB Diploma tests aren't till May

Essay - Writing is definitely my strong point. It'll probably be about the quirky irrationalities that have shaped my personality. (My father's a polygamist, I was pretty much raised in a cult, my little brother's autism, etc.)

References - I should be getting really good ones from my counselor, my english teacher I've had for 3 years, and I'm debating between my theatre teacher of 4 years & my NHS advisor.

ECs - I'm really passionate about community service, especially the Invisible Children. I'm also really into Theatre (trying out for fall play & spring musical), and will likely be pursing film studies.

Yeah, my SAT's are bad, but I'm 96% certain they'll raise dramatically. So assuming I score +2000, and my SATII's are decent, what are my chances.

You seem intelligent but you need to raised the SAT scores to about 2150 to be safe (even then, its sketchy). You seem very committed to school work which is good… just try to raise that SAT score.

P.S show them that you’re very much into your EC (film studies)

you have basically no chance of getting into columbia, even if you raise both your critical reading and writing scores by 100 points. your extracurriculars are not really on par. being a “most improved” only means that you sucked at the activity. why would columbia take a student like that over students who were consistently the best at those activities? you havent taken any SAT2s yet and you plan on doing ED? based on your SAT1 scores i doubt youd do even mediocre on math and literature, and you would only get to take them once. finally, you say writing is your strong point? how the hell did you get a 600 on the writing section of the SAT?? your essay cant possibly be good at all. youd be much better off applying to colleges ranked in the 40s and 50s. but the best of luck to you in that regard.

oh, but the fact that youre black should help loads

■■■■■ ^ lol

Don’t listen to that pessimistic jerk hagger; he’s applying ED to Columbia and doesn’t want competition, especially from students with good chances, like you.

If you can raise your SAT by 200 points (which you seem confident you can do) and score solidly on your SAT IIs, I think you have a very good shot at Columbia. Your ECs are extremely impressive, in the community, in your school, and on your own (you wrote a novel!), and would probably be your selling point. And despite hagger saying this sarcastically, your race and location (AZ) may help you a little bit.

Last year, the chance of making Columbia increased almost three times for ED, and about half of the incoming class was filled with ED students. I think if that’s your top choice for school, you ought to apply early. Good luck!
