I'll estimate that I'll graduate 9th grade with a 89 average. Its not really bad, but I don't think its enough for NYU. I just finished my first term and the grade I got for Global 1 is an 85. This 85 is going on my transcript and will stay there FOREVER (I want to cry). I promise myself I'll work hard on my next three high school years. Can I still get into NYU?

please say anything

bump

It’s first semester freshman year. Nothing is set in concrete yet. Really.

Obviously the better you do from here on forth, the better your chances. The fact that you’re worrying in 9th grade is fabulous. That’s more intitiative than I ever took at that age.

NYU: Aim for 32+/2150+

If you average is 89 and you have one class at 85 dragging down your average, it sounds like you have mostly As (90+) in your classes. Obviously you want to shoot for straight As but don’t worry too much about the past. A B or two in freshman year is about the least important thing that can happen to a transcript.

Confession time: Ninth grade was pretty darn bad for me (as it is for everyone, believe me). Luckily, I took enough classes that year (16, actually- don’t ask) that my 75 in math was overshadowed and I kept a good GPA, but I still did a very good bit of worrying about that math grade over the next couple of years, even as my grades went up. And guess what? I got into the college of my choice. And the gap year program of my choice. Nobody asked me about that grade, because there is so much more to me than that.
As catisforfite noted, if you have an 85 and your GPA is 89 you must have some other great grades in there. In addition, you’ve probably got a whole lot more going for you outside of school. When you hit the NYU application process, all that is going to shine through far more brightly than your 85 in history will.
At this stage, you haven’t even finished ninth grade yet- you’ve still got time to prove you’re amazing NO MATTER WHAT GRADES YOU GET. Colleges in general look for more than grades- they also look for SAT scores. (Okay, joking…) Every awesome thing about you is going to go on that application, in reality, and if NYU overlooks all of that because of one frosh grade then they don’t deserve you. That’s the bottom line here.
Good luck throughout the rest of high school!
