If I am failing CHM2045 in the Spring with Mitchell... would it be best to drop it and take it with Korolev in Summer C?

If you get Bright Futures, you don’t want to fail a class. You’ll lose your Bright Futures. It would be better to Withdraw but each case is different. Talk to your advisor.

I am thinking of dropping it on drop day and retaking in the summer, have you heard if it is easier in the summer?

Given the nature of CHM2045 being a weed out course and the fact that Summer C is a Fall/Spring semester cramped in less time, I would say not to assume it will be easier.

What is your major? Maybe we could find you alternatives.

If you have a major requiring Chem 2045 and you are failing, you may get by in summer, but what are you going to do when you get to more difficult classes. I’d hate to see what would happen if you had to take organic chem. You may have to consider a new major.

Also, the notion of the weed-out class is not something I adhere to (and I have taught a class people considered to be a weed out class). You either can do it or you can’t. Teacher, in general, do not go out of their way to weed people out. We do however know that a certain number of student won’t have the aptitude for a particular discipline.

With all due respect to the proffessor call it what you want but yes chm2045 is a weed out course. If you are an Engineering, Pre-Med, Pharmacy major and do not fully understand this material? You may want to consider changing your major. I know it doesnt sound nice but the truth hurts.

Speak with a counselor he or she will guide you.

How about this gator4ever, the students weed themselves out by not being able to do the work.

After that we said the same thing. If you can’t do the work get out of the major.

Those who reply are right. Majors in Engineering, Biology, Medical, etc. require this course. If you’ve noticed, this is the first course for most tracks. If you are having a hard time understanding, or are wanting to get by, a course that is fundamental to most of these majors, then you’re going to have a bad time.

If you’re major is the kind that needs chemistry, you might want to consider changing majors.

Yes professor we are in fact saying the same thing. If Chemistry does not come easy and his major is one of the listed? It is time to reconsider a change.

UNLESS? and this is very important he didnt apply himself and took the class lightly and he knows he could do better.

I had friends who took Chem 1 Summer C with Gower and they said it was much easier because he was the only professor, so he wrote the exams (not Mitchell) which made them easier. With that said, the difficulty of Summer C is going to vary based on how easy Korolev is on her students. If you are failing, and money is no object, then definitely withdraw and retake. If you fail and retake, it will heavily damage your GPA. I’ve seen this happen to a friend. If money does matter, you ultimately are going to have to choose between that and your GPA.

If you’re pre-health:
DEFINITELY WITHDRAW. A withdrawal on a transcript implies that you were failing, but pulled out to avoid hurting your GPA. If you retake, ensure you get an A or A-, otherwise it will seem as if you didn’t pay attention at all the first time around or learned from your mistakes.

If you are chemistry (not pre-health) or engineering major:
Don’t let one class discourage you. There is still hope, but you REALLY need to realize your mistakes quickly and ensure they don’t happen again. Whether or not you withdraw is a matter of money vs. GPA. It sucks, but that’s just how it is. Also, for most engineering majors, you don’t need to go past chem 1. After that, it’s all math, physics, and specialized engineering courses.

Hopefully things work out in the end. Good luck. :)

They make 2045 way too hard…having graduated with a degree in Biology I don’t use Chemistry at all…yes I understand the basics, but in no way do I need the minute details they trip you up on! Waste of time class, along with the others. It is a way for them to make more money off students.

Its usually the case that alot of the material you learn will become useless as you specialize. The aim of CHM2045 (as well as many other courses, even in your major and field) is to learn about it broadly.

While it may be useless for some, it isn’t for others. It may seem like a way of them making money off you, but they really are trying to expose you to your interests.

P.S. this doesn’t apply to the useless gen ed’s!
