I'm in Wharton... ask away
the good:

-the food carts are awesome
As I just ate a pepper steak from steak queen, can't fault you here
-some of the people here are amazingly fun to talk to
I'd say most people have something to say, but yeah, conversations are the best part of college
-the campus is very campusy, yet I can go downtown
My favorite thing about Penn has always been the fact that if you want to be in a campus, you can do that quite easily...but if you want to go into Philly, you can just fall into it.
-the proffesors are alll really intense (especially in Wharton)
I...don't know if I totally agree, and I don't know if this should be considered a strength. But I've taken more classes out of Wharton than in...but even from the professors in Wharton, if you have an ounce of confidence they're usually pretty decent. If your only example is a MGMT100 prof than they are not at all representative of the Wharton faculty. Some of the "big name" profs can be egos but overall, professors are just people.
-Wharton means I can talk to anyone I want in the world (pretty much) and have them respond
Hahaha
-the girls are promiscuous and most of the guys here have no game... awesome combination
Eh, I think this is true of most places. If you have an ounce of game, you can get someone to touch your *****. But the question is a matter of whether or not you want that person...

I'd say the real strength of Penn is that there are a lot of women/men (for the laydeez) with a variety of interests, and you KNOW they're all smart, even the dumb ones :) It's nice to know that there is a general common denominator of intelligence (albeit at differing levels and in different ways). I think there's a great diversity of people at Penn, which is nice, because if you're some sort of evolution denying fundie...you can find others! If you are a diehard atheist druggie...hello! If you're a coke snorting eurotrash party hunter, you will not go wanting for company!

I thought it'd be fair to go through the good, many of which I agree with, before trashing the bad!
the bad:
-the dining here is TERRIBLE
It's not so bad, for dining hall food! I mean, yes, many other schools have better, but really, if you pace yourself, it's fine...and after freshman year, just don't get a meal plan! I'm sorry if they served venison at your HS but yeah, it's not so bad.
-Penn is super beaurocratic
I don't even know what this means! Most universities are bureaucratic institutions, but within that, I've had NO trouble finding the people I need to talk to and getting what I need done. In most cases if you ignore a form and just go to the source, you're set.
-a lot of the professors are very impersonal
Professors are people. People can be impersonal, but you've taken...what, 4/5 classes? That's an EXTREMELY limited set. Maybe you have some friends in 5000 person intro lectures...well, it's hard for a professor to get to know people in such massive lectures! But without fail, I've had at least one conversation with every prof I've ever had, and they've all been pretty cool! It's just a matter of having a little personality, some genuine interest, and an ounce of confidence. Most professors love to talk to students, and will be blown away if you have genuine interest!

Then again, there are the egos and whatnot who will blow off students, but profs are people.
-the MATH DEPARTMENT BLOWS AT PENN
HAY GUYZ I TOOK ONE MATH CLASS LOLZ

Honestly, I am so tired of refuting this one.

The CALCULUS cycle at Penn does suck...but once you get above it, we have some really brilliant professors! Most of the calculus classes aren't even taught by Penn faculty. SOrry you hated 104 or 114 or whatever...but yeah. I'm impressed that your ass has such vocabulary.
-MGMT100 is probably the most ******** class I've ever taken in my life
As much as I hated MGMT100 and as much as I agree with you, I feel this is an unfair representation. I won't spend too much time actually defending Wharton because even if MGMT100 is ******** it's not like people are going to stop applying :) But it's one of those classes that some people get a whole lot out of and some people get nothing out of. Not my fave, but if you go in with a good attitude (which is essential!) then at least it is a chance to meet some new people.
-so many Wharton kids are just, well, dumb... (the dual degree kids are all really smart here ).....
I am a joint-degree person, and you flatter us, but really, everyone at Penn is intelligent. I mean, many people don't love pure knowledge or academic pursuits or they revel in how much they don't know or whatever, but really, at the end of the day, maybe they're only 5 standard deviations off of the national average for intelligence instead of 6. Everyone at Penn is damn smart...but when you are in such an elite environment you start to lose perspective.

I will agree that there is a dearth of people who really appreciate academic pursuits, however.
so many athletes who all have "study halls" to make sure they get their homework done because they got in with low SATs....
I despise recruiting.
so many kids with SUPER HIGH GPAs in high school who just work super hard and aren't particularly intelligent
I think you're a harsh judge of intellect. I'm sure that I can find people who easily dwarf your intelligence, and would make you look like someone who just go through the motions. So someone makes up for intelligence with work...so what? Obviously to get here they had to have some level. Do you understand everything instantaneously? Have you never had to work? I can find you classes that will utterly destroy you. I don't get why people criticize people who work hard...when you don't get a subject, you study it, when you don't get something, you do what's necessary to let it make sense. How is this a bad things? Sure, it might not bode well for Penn's philosophical IQ, which bothers me as much as it does you, but I mean...with something as difficult to quantify as intelligence, qualifying someone as dumb just because they worked hard to get here is pretty lame.

[quote[
-Wharton kills any entrepreneurial spirit you may have had and gears you to work for someone else for a long time for many hours
This I agree with! But if you have an ounce of personality, you can overcome...or can you
-a lot of people here just make me go ***, how did you get in here??
Are these the dumb ones who worked hard in HS?
-a lot of kids here seem pretty mediocre
COmpared to?
-self-segragated campus: blacks hang out with pretty much blacks, asians with asians, and whites with whites
To a degree, there is self segregation...but to a degree, there isn't. essentially, people are lazy, and it's this "Penn self segregates" attitude that creates the self segregation. The vast majority of my friends are Indian (international -- the american borns are intolerable) or asian. I'm white (well, half venezuelan, but white). The trick is that people are too lazy to put their own prejudices and whatever at the door and expect everyone else to make the first move. If you engage other people on their own level usually they'll surprise you for the better. I think that self-segregation is a problem, but it's more of a problem because everyone expects other people to do something about it.
-sleep is not something you do here
I get lots of sleep! And my grades are good! And I party! What are you even taking?

Once again, JCoveney has spoken.

Thank you for the clarifications

JCoveney sounds like a thread hijacker....

point is i posted here to answer questions

Oh no! I've been labelled!

So you can answer people with your stilted, naive view of things having been here for 3 months? What power you wield.

Everyone knows top priority online is to show off your e-wang

JCo posted an alternative view to your opinions....yes..."opinions" because what you posted are not answers, but opinions.

Your intentions are good, but I feel that you lack perspective. And Jco's post doesn't deter your thread - his thread offers more answers, does JCo not then achieve the purpose of this thread?

I agree with JCo. U're a Wharton frosh - giving it a little bit of time.

oh plz jco you've got it all wrong

I don't have good luck with the ladies for nothing

Agreed with JCoveney and Im also a Wharton freshman

i actually agree with a lot of what JCo says, i think you got me wrong.

still, you yourself post you are a dual degree student :)

maybe my expectations were huge coming in, and that's probably what cuased me to be so dissalusioned.

i still maintain the worst part probably is that people here overall are so mediocre

i've met some awesomely intense and interesting people, yet Wharton overall feels like it's got this IBANKING IBANKING CONSULTING CONSULTING thing going on that dulls the **** out of people

Uh, legend, you don't have good luck with the ladies.

If you take challenging courses, Penn is certainly not easy. If your objective is to get straight A's, then yes, you probably will not sleep much. But for those who are smart enough to realize that social skills are far more important than GPAs in the real world, the amount of work required to shoot for some Bs/low As isn't that bad. And as far as the level of intelligence being low here, that couldn't be further from the truth. I've taken a couple of honors classes, and to be honest, I never could have expected how smart the average student would be in those seminars. Math and Science courses also tend to attract much smarter students here when compared to wharton/communications etc... I agree with though when he says that many of the students who excel in wharton aren't crazy bright to begin with, they just work their a$$es off.

As far as diversity goes, there is absolutely none. Sure the admissions committe will tell u there are people from 5000 countries and ethnicities blah blah. But pretty much everyone on campus comes from the same upper class background, and the foreign students tend to be better money wise than the domestic ones.

Dining Halls are so-so, but the food isn't really THAT bad. The guys who work there are sweet as hell and going there is a good time( food carts are dope, yes, but for gods sake don't become addicted to them or else you'll gain 50 lbs)

As far as the math department, it has it's share of amazing and horrible profs. That'll be the case at any school.

The best advice for incoming frosh would be to make the most of you're experience. By that, I mean, you have to leave you're comfort zone and find activities you enjoy. Unlike hs though, there's noone whos gonna drag you out of your dorm and force you to do stuff. You gotta make it happen on your own. Penn has tons of activities, speakers, and club sports, more than you can find at most other places. Whether it's comedy, badmiton, swimming, finance, you name it, there's a club/activity for you. Don't be one of those kids who sits in their room all day and studies-that will set you up for a very bad college experience.

Hahaha, his post is so true, except I have to say I loved management 100 though there was a good load of bs. It really depends on what project you get.

Wow, im so happy theres intelligent life at wharton... all ive heard about since being accepted is that everyone there got in b.c of athletics, and are thus idiots...

did you ever regret not applying to one of the bigger name schools (ie princeton, harvard) when you had such a good chance of getting in? I feel that way right now... I mean, whartons obviously the best there is, but if im planning on getting an MBA anyways, maybe princeton or harvard was the better way to go
