i'm kind of lost...

i got accepted into UCF for next fall ('09) and i think that there is a BIG change of me going there. when i applied to UCF i said that my major was undecided b/c i was just planning to finish my pre-reqs for pharmacy school there and then transfer to pharm school later.

if i go to UF i would declare my major as pre-pharmacy (that's what i put as my major on the application). so i would be completing my pre-reqs for pharmay school. but since i'm going to UCF and they don't have a pharmacy program or a pre-pharmacy major what do i do?

this may sound really stupid to ask but can someone please explain (make clearer) to me what a major is?

say i claim my major as psychology or something. would i earn a bacchaulerate degree in psychology?

since i am aa undecided major for UCF what classes would i be taking my freshman year in college? just my pre-reqs for pharm school?

i'm just really confused on majors, bacchaulerate degree, how long it takes to earn a bacchaulerate degree, etc. can someone please make things clearer for me! thank you so much!

My d was considering pharmacy at one point. She was going to still major in engineering so that she would have a good degree to fall back on in the event that a. she didn't get into pharmacy school, or b. changed her mind about attending pharmacy school. She also considered biochemistry as a major, but then she realized she didn't know what she'd do with a biochem degree if she didn't get into pharmacy school. Anyway, what I'm saying is that she was going to do her pre-reqs for pharmacy (trying to complete them all in the first two years), and then apply to pharmacy school like you were saying. If she didn't get in after the second year, she was going to keep working on her major (chemE) and reapply after 3 years, etc.

The major you choose is delineating a course of study you want to pursue. It'll be the degree you have at the end of four years, assuming you complete all the requisites for that major. If you get into pharmacy school at the end of two years, you will not graduate with a degree in (insert major here). But you'll graduate with a pharmD, so that's not an issue.

zebes, probably making this all clear as mud

P.S. If you decide to start at UCF you should speak with a counselor at first year exploration, explaining what you are doing and making sure that you are getting the courses you need. You might go in with a print out of the pre-req courses that UF pharmacy school requires, as an example, so that you are doing what you need to do.

Some people who are considering pharmacy at UCF major in M and M (Molecular Biology and Microbiology) which is basically, premed. Others can major in Health Science (in the College of Public Affairs). I agree though about downloading the pharmacy prerequisites so that you make sure that you take the correct courses (like chemistry and biology ...since there are so many to choose from in each division).

From the UCF M & M info page:

Students seeking admission to professional schools (medical, dental,
optometry, veterinary, podiatry, and pharmacy) will meet all the admission
requirements for those programs while obtaining a Molecular
Biology and Microbiology degree.

so let's say i go to UCF and decide that while i'm at UCF trying to finish my pre-reqs for pharmacy school i want to declare my major as health sciences. i would be taking classes to fulfill my pre-reqs and taking classes to earn a degree in health sciences?

^^^
Yes, you'll probably find there's a great deal of overlap. If you want, you can go on-line at the UCF website and use an online catalog. In this you will find every major and the courses you need to complete a degree in that major, whether it's a B.A., B.S., etc. Now, you can take a print-out of the pharmacy pre-reqs and compare that with the first couple years worth of courses you need to take for the major you've chosen, in your example, health sciences. You should see overlap. Or at the very least you should see areas where you can use pharmacy pre-reqs as electives which you'll need with any major. Remember the first two years are a lot of gen ed requirements. In all the florida universities you have to complete certain amounts of gen-eds, i.e. certain classes in english, history (social sciences), science, math, etc. You will just make sure that the classes you are taking, in fulfillment of these requirements, work towards your pharmacy pre-reqs. I bet that if you talk to an advisor in the area that you are looking at -- because there are so many others doing pre-professional degrees -- that they have some sort of a program design already in place. You'll just need to speak to an advisor and make your goals clear to them ... pharmacy being your ultimate goal.
