I'm lost! Any help for a potential transfer student?

I am just beginning to research the requirements to transfer in either fall 2008 or fall 2009, and I would greatly appreciate any advise about this process that you are willing to lend!

I did not apply to college out of high school, but I am attending De Anza community college with current hopes of transfering to UCLA or UCB as an electrical engineering undergraduate. I have looked into all of the major course requirements, and I will complete IGETC as well as my AA in addition to these courses.

Some questions that I came up with (prefered UCLA transfer):

The acceptance rate of the school of letters and sciences is supposedly almost 90% with TAP, honors scholar, and 3.5+ gpa, but what is the chance of the engineering school?

Can I apply to both schools? What if I take the easy transfer to letters and sciences, and then try to switch to an engineering major?

I have worked full time (30-40 hrs/wk) since the day I got out of high school, and I only take classes at night. I learn more at work than school, but I am worried that this won't show on an application. Any suggestions as to making myself look good for these schools?

All the Best,

1) Become cozy with your transfer counselor. choose the most experienced one in the room. And meet with them at least three times a semester.
2) Get membership into Honors, PTK (phi theta kappa), and or ASG (associated student government)
3) check out and read requirements for your major if you have not already done so at: http://www.assist.org/ for any changes that might have been made this school year.
4) include in your personal essay that you leaned lots from your work

LA's School of Engineering is harder to get into, wither or not you are already in UCLA - because of the numerous red tape that goes along with transferring majors/schools once you're in LA. But I do believe that if you get into Letters and Science and then transfer to Engineering is much safer than to apply straight for the school. Then again it all depends upon how confident you are about your chances. But remember that for UCLA: "It's our (their) policy that applicants are reviewed only for their first choice major".

Thank you for the helpful answers. I am actually in the honors institute, but I will definately be joining Phi Theta Kappa as you mentioned.

I may end up applying to the letters and sciences in 2008, and then follow up by applying to the engineering school whether I am already there or not.
