I need some leadership to embellish my future college application. How do i do it? I don't think I can become the founder of a club since my school already has every possible type of club! Can i just go up to the organizors of a new club and ask for a position? It's difficult because people always appoint their friends to high posts.

I don't think you should do it just to pad your application.

If you aren't a leader of something by now, you probably aren't a natural leader. If you're not the leader type, then why are you pretending to be? There are better things to do make yourself look good than by pretending to be someone you're not and ruining things for some poor unsuspecting club.

Why don't you try a more individualistic endeavor? Like taking on a self-project? You could volunteer more, or join a new activity that you have been interested in for a while. For example, I plan to make myself more cultured this summer by studying a language and taking advantage of my library and local museums. I'm sure that would make a really cool college essay later on: The Culturing of Yasmin. :)

Sometimes being a club, class, ASB officer just isn't what's important to some people, so they don't have those "leadership positions" to emphasize their leadership skills on college applications... but that doesn't mean they are "followers." I think it's probably recognized by admissions officers that in many cases, club, class or ASB posts are almost entirely meaningless--like they are at my school, and yours, it sounds like.

Be a leader in the classroom so that your teachers will mention that in their letters of recommendation. That's meaningful.

Boy Scouts

I agree with princessbell. You shouldn't force yourself to take leadership positions unless you would enjoy it. Some people just aren't leaders and colleges should understand that.

don't worry about it too much. If you really want to be a leader then be one for a club you're passionate about, not just because it will look good on your college application.

if ur not comfortable with having a leadership role or ur lacking leadership skills then dont bother, especially if ur brushing it up just for ur apps. but if ur that desperate, then in whatever club ur in wait for when they announce elections for officer positions and try running for them. u might gain confidence in the process

leadership matters, but try to get the lowest job if possible...might be easier, u can then get a higher position next year cuz of experience.

also start a club...I'm sure there's something...video game, ping pong club, anime club, etc.

why put her down? She's probably intimidated. I say try going participating more passionately at the club or activity you are interested in most. Show your talents, your committment, and your loyalty as a member. Other members will notice that, and the advisor will too. Speak up also, tell the advisor what you think, and how you think such and such can improve, and ask her what you can do more, etc. Then either run for office, or ask the advisor next year or whenever that you are interested in becoming an officer, who knows she might even appoint you without even voting.

I say try it, but don't force yourself through it. If you dont like it then stop, and maybe then "leadershippositions" are not for you, and like princessbell said, you can do individualistic projects too.

@princessbell, how are you taking advantage of local libraries and museums? I am interested in what you are doing. :)

here's my take on the whole "every college looks for people who are leaders" thing, but it may just be my way of justifying the fact that i hate to lead: if you have a school/workplace that is only made up of leader because those are the only people who were accepted/hired, nothing will ever get done because everyone will try to lead and do it their own way. i'm a damn proud follower, and i believe this world needs followers. go me! lol

thanks for all your advice. but i never said i am not capable of leading. I simply asked how to find leadership opportunities. we already have video game club, ping poing, and anime and every other type of club at our school so.. it was still good hearing your feedback. thanks again

Then become friends with the founder of a club...lol

You can get involved in the ASB aka Student Body...colleges seem to value that more than club leadership (which honestly, doesn't count for much). And for those who say this person is not a natural leader, hey, some people aren't born natural leaders! But by seeking a leadership position s/he can certainly learn to become a leader.

NO ONE is born a leader. That is just myth.

does anyone care about ASB? I mean, I did it freshman year, and overall I thought that it was pretty pointless as we didn't really do anything to help the school.

A-san:

I snorted when I read your post. I haven't been to the library in months, except at school (to sleep). I can hardly remember the last time I saw the inside of a public library. I've been pretty busy. But this summer, I'm totally going to read all the good stuff.

I was complaining to my dad about how my school only taught us dumb stuff (well, every school.) what's the point of doing american history EVERY FRICKIN YEAR SINCE 3rd GRADE!!!! I don't know crap about the world and it makes me angry at america's systems when an exchange student can spit out the 50 states and capitals, and I don't even know what hemisphere their country is in or what language they speak there. (And I am embarrased for us when my classmates ask if they speak 'Asian') America is failing at culturing our kids! I don't know anything about real art or literature. my extent of art knowledge is from reading The Secret Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler (that book where the kids go to that art museum in new york to see michelangelo's david and bathe in the fountain) and the Da Vinci Code. This is embarrasing! And let's not start on literature. What have we wasted our time on in school? Friggin ROMEO AND JULIET? Cliche of all cliches! And now the Lord of the Flies? You're killing me! Where's the Kafka, and Goethe and Plato and Aristotle and the real GOOD Shakespeare? Who's finally going to tell me about Marx, and Raphael, and Nietzeche. NOBODY!!! Where's the individuality in school? NOWHERE!!!!!!!!

So, this summer, I'm going to culture myself.

Good for you!

(not sarcastic, i agree with you completely)

Our math sucks compared to theirs too...
