I'm really mediocre & want to go into film, what are my chances?

Here's all my stuff:
Finishing up my junior year.

Current GPA: 3.44, hopefully a 3.5 by the middle of senior year
SAT: 1840 (590 reading, 600 writing, 650 math), planning on over 1900 when I retake it next October
Honors: 2 freshman year, 3 sophomore year, 3 junior year, none senior year (bc of APs)
APs: 1 junior year, 3 senior year (probably a 4 in Psychology but maybe a 5, hopefully 4s in Euro, Literature, and Art next year)
Other classes: math up to Calc I, 3 years of Spanish, 4 years of art including AP, digital filmmaking, photography, TV Studio

In school extra curriculars:
-Literature club 9th grade, donated my photos for a publication 9th & 11th grade
-Poi club (light dancing) 10th-12th grade
-TV Studio club 11th-12th grade
-Orchestra 9th grade
-Chorus 10th grade

Out of school extras:
-horse show volunteer (annually) 9th-12th grade
-hospital volunteer (weekly) 11th-12th grade
-part time waitress 11th-12th grade
-private cello lessons 9th-10th grade
-private piano lessons (10 years through 10th grade)

Summer activities:
- 3-week medical careers program at a university
- 6-week filmmaking program with a private film institute
- probably a weekend college sample trip at RIT including 4 lessons in photography and video

I'm also a decent writer so I'm planning on having a killer essay and recommendation from my English teacher!!
The film program will supply me with a creative sample.

East Coast Colleges I'm looking at:
Ithaca College
Rochester Inst. Tech.
Syracuse U.
Boston U.***
Emerson College (1st choice!!)***
Mass. College Of Art and Design
Temple U. (I'm from PA and would rather go out of state, is this an ok back-up?)
Pratt Inst.
NYU*** (just out of curiosity, I really don't think I have a chance)
Purchase

Other areas in US:
Columbia College Chicago
Loyola U. Chicago
San Francisco State U.
San Diego State U.
Art Inst. of Seattle

In the UK:
Regents University London
Hertfordshire U.
Edinburgh U.

***hugest doubts of getting in

Obviously I don't expect help with all of these but if anyone has any experience it would be greatly appreciated xx

If you’re going for film, CSU Long Beach and CSU Northridge also have excellent film programs that you could get into. Might be worth a look.

Edinburgh requires three APs / SATIIs for admissions- you could get an offer of a place “conditional” on AP scores for exams you haven’t taken at the time of application, but you would not be sure of your place until the AP results come out in July. I would guess that Edinburgh would be a reach for you.

Hertfordshire requires 280 UCAS points for the film course (see here: http://www.ucas.com/how-it-all-works/explore-your-options/entry-requirements/tariff-tables/app</a>), but they specify they want one in Art (which means that your offer could be conditional on your AP Art results).

Regent’s only wants 3 APs with a score of 3, or 2 APs with a score of 4, but again your offer would be conditional on your July results.

Emerson has a great program and I think you have a very good chance of getting in.
For NYU, will you apply to Tisch? If so, the artistic evaluation is quite important. Submit a great piece of work and you might get in.

Thank you!!
Cultclassic: I will definitely look into those programs
collegemoms: I’ve read on the websites something about taking the ACT instead? My mom wants me to take the ACT next fall as well.
soze: yes, i would be applying to Tisch. Are grades as important to Tisch as they are to the rest of NYU?

Grades are “important” to Tisch applicants, but the artistic evaluation is probably at least as important and therefore Tisch admits tend to skew lower in terms of academic stats. Again, submit an outstanding piece and you have a chance. If you were applying to NYU A&S, I’d say no way, but again with Tisch there is another factor.

By the time it is mid senior year, it won’t matter. 2. How could you predict 5s on APs? You’ve never even taken the course. I’m confused as to how someone goes from a 3.4 GPA to mastering all their APs and getting 5s. Also, getting 5s on the exam next year will not have any impact on your admissions because the scores will come out, you would have already graduated.

What I will say is, look at Full Sail University. They have an incredible film program and because they are for profit, they have amazing facilities and students get great equipment. It’s in Winter Park Florida. Even though it has open admissions, it still is as amazing school. So you don’t have to worry about GPAs or SATs when applying there.

George Lucas is an alumnus of CSULB’s Film and Electronic Arts Department and he did rather well.
