I'm scared - FSU, Stetson, UCF, Auburn

Hi! I'm almost done with all of my applications. I'm just worried about getting into my colleges because of my GPA.

My GPA is a 2.8UW cumulatively because I missed half of my Freshman year due to a cancer diagnosis.

My schedule has been rigorous throughout high school, but my grades did suffer due to missing the half year, and trying to complete freshman year during the summer before sophomore year.

My top choice college is FSU. I plan on double majoring in music education and music therapy. I have done many things concerning music at FSU (tri-state festival, Tallahassee Youth Orchestra, etc). Basically, I spend a lot of time at FSU, and I am familiar with many members of the faculty/students.

I am unable to drive to any of my other schools due to gas being way too expensive, so if I went to any of the other three schools, I would study something else.

Most of my ECs are related to band, but I also have Latin, Brain Bowl, Mu Alpha Theta, among others.

So what are my chances of getting into these schools?

Cancer diagnosis…let me just first say, wow. I really hope that your cancer goes away (if it already hasn’t) and never returns. Kudos to you for your bravery.
That being said, colleges should have a soul and realize that your GPA would be higher had your health cooperated.
For FSU, it’s really good that you’re already involved in their community. Maybe there’s a way you can mention that in your app? It looks amazing and like you’re already dedicated to the school (which they love).
What are your test scores? Or are those schools test-optional? Not too familiar with their policy regarding that…
If your essay is good and you have quality letters of rec, that always helps!!
FSU- it might be tough, but your involvement with their community and the fact that you suffered a major health issue will work to your benefit. I’d say it’s a 50/50 chance
Stetson- slightly easier than FSU, so I’d say a 60% chance of getting in
UCF- probably the same amount of chance as FSU
Auburn- highest chance of getting accepted here, I’d say there’s an 80-85% chance you’d get in.
Best of luck with everything!!

My Reading and Writing were high (600s) but I struggled in math. I took the SAT again earlier this month, and I think I did much better. My grades are very good this year (3.6UW 4.4W for the 1st quarter). Like I said, I’m at FSU every single weekend, and I have spent a lot of time with the faculty of the music school. The horn professor is letting me play my audition piece before my audition so she can give me pointers.

I’m not really worried about getting into the College of Music, because of my background. I’m much more worried about getting into the University.

I’m planning on trying to integrate my story and my low GPA into my essay so that I have a chance to explain it. If that doesn’t work, I guess I will just have to call the admissions office. I just don’t want to sound like I’m whining and trying to get admitted with a “sob-story”. My GPA definitely doesn’t reflect my ability.

Thanks for your help. :)

bump. does anyone else have an opinion?
