Im totally freaking out...chance..

ok..so Im using my older sisters account because she isnt using it anymore

so

I just finished junior year
and Im kind of freaking out whether I'll be able to get into college...esp. JHU

so the thing is I got a 35 on my ACT
BUT!! my gpa is a 3.3 I KNOW..its a HORRIFIC..DISASTERous...NO WAY in hell Im getting into college gpa

so what are my chances in getting into john hopkins

I plan to apply ED

My extra creds include

3 years in my high school newspaper
2 years on my school magazine
1 year in yearbook

was an editor this year for my school newspaper and also a copy editor
I will be developing my own magazine next year with my friends..I will be editor-in-chief...and hopefully be able to circulate it around my city.

Ive writen a ton of poems...I won 1st place in my school's refelction contest

Im taking 2 University classes this summer that pertain to history and woman studies ( something I would be applying as my major for JHU)

Is my gpa going to absolutly ruin my chances? Is my ACT score going to help me gain some cred'?

I plan to send a book full of my peoms and a copy of my magazine Im developing when I apply.

Is the major im going to apply under going to make it difficult ( because of the many other people applying as humanities major) to get in?

I will have taken 6 AP classes by the end of senior year.

THANKS!...and be as harsh as possible...

What's your class rank? You still have a shot I'd say but it depends on how well you present yourself on your app. Personally, I did absolutely nothing in high school, nor did I bother lifting a finger for the SAT's so my stats were pretty crappy but I still squeezed in ...? o_O Your prospective major shouldn't technically affect your chances of getting in (unless it's BME), but since you're very writing and humanities oriented to begin with, it wouldn't make sense of you to apply as anything else. Your ACT's are stellar and it will get you a bit of credibility but seeing how there's such a discrepancy between your GPA and test scores, it really makes me wonder what went wrong... If it's something legit I would definitely try to communicate that to admissions. I wouldn't say your GPA has ruined your chances but it will certainly hurt you quite a bit as I'd personally say GPA is much more important than ACT's. Then again, it might help if you specify a class rank (either exact, decile, or quartile) so you can get a better estimate. G'luck though =)

I strongly suggest you learn more about the school before commiting yourself to ED; something about your post tells me that you didn't do your research.

I did a great deal of research for this college, I first got interested in it after my brother's girlfriend told me how much fun she had there when she went there for undergrad and after visting the campus I trully believed I could adjust to the enviroment. My number one choice is john hopkins and thats why Im applying under ED. I know this school is mostly known for science ( and thus a bit harder to get into when applying as a science major) but I recently read that humanities at John Hopkins is getting better and better each year. My school doesnt rank, so I really dont know where I stand in my graduating class. I took one class at a community college my freshman year summer ( does anyone know if John Hopkins inputs this grade into my overall gpa, or do they only used grades I recieved in high school courses?). I do have a personal reason for my horrific gpa, but im not sure if they will recieve this reason as simply as an excuse on my part. Im hoping that one of my teachers I have for my university classes Im taking will give me a rec. Do you think that will have an impact since its from a UC proffesor? And should I send my magazine and my book of poems with my application...or is that too much?

A little research could tell you the university is JohnS Hopkins. Not to be harsh, but c'mon.

However, Hopkins' writing seminars is one of the best in the nation, so you got that going for you.

You have a chance but I would think you could spell the name correctly if you did so much research about the school. The least you could do was spell it correctly!!! It's JohnS hopkins. I hope you see the S at the end of John.

You beat me to it by three minutes. I saw you post that after i already posted this. haha

aw come on...mistake...my bad....but that doesnt mean I havent done my research

my bad..I shall never forget the S in johns ever again...

any more input on my chances?...based on my stats and not based on my spelling ability-or lack there of-

And for the record book, Hopkins is not just known for science. The US News and other rankings are deceptive; Hopkins has many top programs outside of the hard sciences...JHU is known for research, which is at the heart of our educational philosophy since Daniel C. Gilman traveled to Germany to learn about their university model. We were home to the first psychological laboratory in America, we provided the backdrop for the coining of the term "political science" and have played host to some of the world's greatest philosophers, political experts, writers and more, on top of our incredible achievements in the sciences. I'd also make sure you spell and grammar check your writing and definitely don't forget that S. For the record, we take that S thing pretty seriously!

Kid, don't freak out. We have similar stats- I got in ED - Life goes on. Yes, I agree that GPA is probably your biggest loophole. However, you still have an ENTIRE summer to make up for this loss. Calm down and think, THINK of a solution that could make your STAND OUT and shine before admission officers. Last summer, at the same moment, I found my solution, and it worked elegantly in the end.
