I received my Instructions to Appointees packet on Saturday, March 14. In the packet I read that all my immunizations must be done before basic training and have made arrangements to receive all the necessary vaccines.

However, I have just started my Hepatitis A vaccine which is a two-dose series in which the shots are given 6 months apart, which I was unaware that I needed and unaware that it was a series vaccine. I will not be able to have the second shot to complete the series until sometime in September.

Does anyone know if it will be a problem that I won’t have the vaccination completely done by the time basic starts in June?

Actually, that's not exactly true. If you don't have all your immunizations done, they will get done here (at the same time), because you have to have them by law. However, that will help you avoid the whole ordeal (although I personally enjoyed the time away from the cadre).

That is not a problem at all. You can get the second Hep. A at USAFA when it is due. They are happy to stick you! :) I would write down when its due so after BCT when your brain has been fried you will be able to remember. The clinic has records of all your shots, but it will be your job to remember to get over there for the booster.

Enjoy your time until June and good luck! :)

They will not administer the second Hep. A at Inprocessing if it has not yet been 6 mos. from the first. You are perfectly legal to begin Basic with ONE Hep. A. Anytime after 6 mos. the second is due. So if you get the first one NOW, you will need the second one anytime after Sept. 16th. Agree with Petko.

I just got my Hep A vaccination as well. I'm not gonna sweat it. If they do decide to prick me once at BCT, oh well. Like the others said, I'm sure they'll just wait.

Ya, in the instructions it says that they will cover the ones that we don't have or can't get or something. I'm in the same boat. Any others like that? I could go look through that big thing again, and probably will, but its late so just curious lol :)

Trust me, you want as little poking as possible, especially with some of the vaccines. Having a sore arm for a few days while trying to acclimate and deal with PT is rough. The less the better!

had my shots today! I feel like a dog saying that... anyways, I got four of 'em. Tdap (whatever it is) Hep A, Hep B, and Polio. Tomorrow i get to go in again for Tetnus. Yippee skippee

TDap (most will find that their Tetanus booster shot that their child got did not have the "Dap" in it at the time our kids were at the age to get the booster. The "Dap" is in the booster Tetanus shot they give to kids now)

Adult polio

He also had to have a TB test.

Bottom line - he got them Monday and woke up feeling very achy and missed school on Tuesday (this is a kid that I can't remember the last time he was ill and missed school). Anyway, my point is I am glad we did not wait to get these for free at In-Processing because as stated in prior posts I would not want to do anything that knowingly made him feel not up to par in his first few days at the Academy.

To ALL of you taking an immuno record of shots with you - here is one of the biggest things I can remind you to do...........DO NOT FORGET TO TAKE THAT COPY WITH YOU!!!!! Yes, it has happened. Oops! Had all the shots, forgot the records, and yes, got shots again. No proof!!!!! And, REMEMBER WHERE you have that copy in your backpack, etc. and produce it. DO NOT get so intimidated by the in-processing that you forget to hand it over to staff.

Same thing goes for dental records and x-rays.

Please don’t forget to take the immunization records with you, EVEN IF YOU ARE A MILITARY DEPENDANT. When our daughter went into base to have her immunization record checked prior to Iday, she was told “they will have a copy there”. Being the worry wart type of mom I am, I did not believe them and we made sure she had a couple of copies. Although the base personnel stated she was all up to date, she still had one or two immunizations to get on Iday. And we thought we had done so well…

A hint for those that are old enough (18) and don’t like shots. Get the Twinrix shot instead of the hep A and B. The Twinrix is a single shot for both. It is a series of 3 shots (I got the first two before going, then the last one several months later at the academy) instead of the 5 shots for the other two. Much nicer for me! Hate needles!

What does the form mean when it says the polio vaccine and the TB test must be given within 6 months of entrance? Is that 6 months prior to I-day or 6 months after? I don’t have either of those, is that a concern?
