I am currently a sophomore and so far I have gotten all A’s in all of my advanced classes except for one history class where I ended up with a D in one semester. If I get all A’s and maybe a B for the rest of high school will it limit my chances significantly of getting into colleges like UCSB? Any input is helpful.
Do you plan to repeat the semester in which you received the D?
If not, then your D will be included in your UC GPA which only uses 10-11th grades in their GPA calculation.

Getting all A’s in your other classes is great but depending upon which History course you received the D, you will not get credit for that semester and the UC’s have minimum a-g course requirements that you have to met at time of application. For the majority of the UC’s, meeting the minimum is usually not sufficient for admission.
The minimum UC History requirement:
Two years of history, including:
- one year of world or European history, cultures and geography (may be a single yearlong course or two one-semester courses), and
- one year of U.S. history or one-half year of U.S. history and one-half year of civics or American government
No, one D will not keep you from applying and possibly attending a UC, but it will impact your chances unless you repeat the semester.
It is an Honors U.S. History class and I am taking two years of IB world history in my junior and senior year. What does that change?
In my freshman year I took a Gov/econ class too.
You will meet the UC History requirement with the IB courses but unless you repeat the exact same Honors US History semester, your D will be on your transcript and in your UC GPA calculation. How it impacts your GPA will be determined at the end of Junior year when you have all your grades finalized prior to application.
I am trying to understand if I have this correct. You got a D in a US History class. Therefore you are taking far more difficult world history classes in your junior and senior year.
Is this correct?
How is your high school letting you take IB history if your only D was in a history class? What happened that caused you to get a D? How are you going to do better in your future history classes?
I am wondering whether it is a good idea to take IB history classes. I am also wondering if I am just misunderstanding this.
The issue isn’t with history as a subject I just have been in a really bad place mentally so I was having a hard time motivating myself. If I retake the class I would surely get an A i just messed up this year. Would you recommend taking the class again?
If you want the D not included in your GPA, yes retake.
