Importance of IB Finals on Transferring

Hi All!

I'm enrolling in NYU Stern in the Fall and am currently taking my IB Final exams. However I think I won't perform as well as I should for my finals, especially since I've been and still am sick.

I don't think NYU is going to rescind my offer, but how deadly is a 4/5 on HL Math (predicted 7) for transferring to for example Columbia or Penn.

Do I have to submit my IB scores for transferring?

Thanks!!

I doubt that your IB scores will be important at all. Most colleges accept students before they even take their IB exams. Your grades will matter much more than your IB scores.

And, since you are asking about transferring from NYU, any school you are transferring into will certainly be more interested in your performance at NYU than your IB scores.

Hmm I don’t know if they’ll ask for the scores when I apply. The requirement was: high school final transcript. Don’t know if this counts as HS transcript. Thanks!

Bump!

For anyone who successfully transferred, do colleges ask for your IBs/APs before or after the decision??

hi, yes you will need to supply your IB transcripts/test scores for transfer applications.

edit: and that is before any decision is made.

Honestly,

 1. You clearly don’t know how good Stern is. If you don’t want to stay at Stern, go apply to a community college because there are thousands of people who are fighting for your spot out there.
 2. Don’t know how you got into Stern without researching these stuff about admissions and transfers (you could have simply done a research online after hearing your final acceptances) Plus it’s obviously, much easier to consult your high school counsellor or even, simply dial Columbia or UPenn to ask them about the requirement of final transcripts. Besides, contacting them directly may even leave them an impression of you which could possibly be helpful in your future transfer.
 3. University application is really about self-realization and getting to know what you really want in your life. From the fact that you said “I don’t think that NYU is going to rescind my offer”, you don’t seem to value it a lot with that confidence. Because if I were you, I would be DEAD worried of getting into one of the nation’s top business schools with an almost failing maths grade. With that being said, if you simply have your life ambition as getting into the top 10 universities in America (or arguably the world), you probably shouldn’t be doing so poorly in your maths finals. Don’t worry though, since you said you were sick, if you were determined enough, you should consider resitting the IB exams in November and see how it goes.

@jaxball: I highly doubt that a university would rescind their offer if an IB candidate scored a 4/5 on their Maths HL. Speaking as someone who took 4 HLs as a diploma candidate, I would say taking 3 HLs where one is Maths HL is harder than taking 4 HLs mostly in the humanities and languages, like I did. A 4/5 is not failing in the least. A 5 is like a solid B. Furthermore, NYU very probably accepted him on the basis of his entire university career, not the way he will test for the IB exam.

As for transferring, it will depend on the strength of your college transcripts. I suspect Columbia and Penn, and other universities like them, will probably ask for your IB grades only if they are really on the fence about offering you admission. And even then, the chances are slim. I am in the process of applying for transfer to a good handful of colleges, and none have so far asked me for my IB scores. Best of luck!
