is it absolutely necessary to have an interview? i never scheduled one and im worried b/c barnard is one of my first choices. i read that it is optional, but a current student told me that it is highly recommended [ and quite important in the admissions process]… i believe it is too late to schedule one now, correct? i hope my lack of an interview does not hurt my chances at admission.

it's not absolutely necessary; if it were, then barnard would require an interview. having one does demonstrate interest, which is always a good thing, but there are plenty of people here who didn't have interviews and got in just fine. my roommate is one.

I had my Barnard interview two weeks ago and it didn't seem very important. I have had about six interviews and it seemed the least important of all of them. It was held in a law office on the weekend and an admissions rep was actually there as well as the alumni interviewers. Before we had the interview, my alumni interviewer "this wont make or break your application." Although she might have said it to calm the nerves of the applicants, she didn't ask many questions. It was more for my benefit rather than theirs.

imcoolnow, I'm in the same place... it's my first choice along with Smith, but when I tried to schedule an interview they said they were full up. Should I send them an email or something telling them their place on my list?

i doubt sending them an email like that this late in the game would be helpful for your cause, in fact it might just annoy them. why should they give you an interview over someone who might go to the interview thinking barnard is their last choice and come away with it as their first choice?
not having an interview will not hurt you. you could email admissions asking if there's a current student representative who you could talk to about barnard and all the opportunities it will open for you, instead of a formal interview.
