So I know counselors have to send the midyear report to the schools or the first marking period for early admissions, but how much does this affect college admissions?

If I've been a top 20 student out of 600+ students (4.5 W GPA, 31 ACT), and I have straight B's right now in 5 AP, 1 honor, and 1 really high level math, is this going to kill me?

I'm not too worried about the grades because I usually start off slow but end up getting A's by the end of the semester, but I am worried that colleges will think I am slacking off.

What you need to be worried about in class rank is how you stack up to your fellow students. That’s all it means. If rank is calculated at mid-term and other students don’t need the first quarter to find their feet then they may end up ranked slightly ahead of you. No-one cares what you were ranked previously…it will only be at that report.

As far as your GPA, if have straight B’s in your 5AP’s you could potentially be pulling your GPA down. Your 4.5 is excellent, don’t get me wrong, it’s outstanding. Just understand the math, that it could go down.

Is it going to kill you? That depends on where you are applying. At HYP, etc. it may or may not. It depends on the rest of your application. They are generally holistic in nature and that’s one part. However at those highly competitive schools there will be someone on your heels who did not drop in grades.
