I know there has been a lot of discussion on this topic already. But I just want to focus on the SAT 1 here. Many people have told me that SAT 1 is no longer important as there is a weak correlation between SAT 1 score and freshmen college performance... And that the SAT 1 is being "cracked" too easily, with test prep agencies, so that it is no longer a valid indicator of reasoning.. however, from two of the admissions books i've looked at, they all stated that SAT 1 is very important as the admissions officers "inside" are willing to admit more intelligent people than those who just work hard...

So, how important is the SAT 1 in admissions for top Ivies compared to other numbers such as SAT 2's, APs, GPA, Rank or percentil est, recs, essays, ECs, etc...

i got a 1490 with 690 v... I am afraid that the fact that SAT 1 is worth a lot more than most people think will hurt my chance as 690v is below the avg for any ivy..... I am not sure if this will matter, but English is my second language - have spoken it for 6 years now. How do you think this score will affect my chances? thx

Relatively low verble score will hurt your chances of going to Ivy. International students' average scores are getting higher and higher. (For instance, I know for a fact that more than 10 out of 60 seniors in my school already got over v750) But you shouldn't give up! I would recommend you to find a way to somehow prove your English skills by writing research papers, winning English competitions, etc. I don't know how much these stuff will help you but it's definitely a try. Maybe it's just my school (it's a really weird prep school) many competent students are writing research papers.

yeah... my writing score is 740, and i did have a few publications... teachers said my essays are well written as well.... i know 690 is not a good score, it is around 30 - 40 points lower than the average at most ivies... i was just hoping that the SAT is not given a lot of weight, so that my verbal score will not be given a significant weight in the factors of rejection.

690 is not low, a 600 is, i have 600V and 800M, which is like the typical asian SAT scores(with 800M of course), and i didn't do well on writing either, a 700.
700 writing = 600 V
because they are both in the same percentile
i am more scared than you are.

:( this really sucks... i can't believe how much they stress a 3 hour exam...

this reminds me of the song "Child Psychology" - "Life is unfair, kill youself or get over it."
