Importance of SAT II's

alright my app is pretty good besides my SAT II scores (I got a 740 Math 1, 630 Lit, 550 US History)

are they that important?

For Harvard?

Yes.

Harvard places huge importance on SAT 2s. Your Math 1 Score is fine (as long as anything is above 700, it is OK). Any other opinions?

How would I look with a Bio 800, Lit 760, and US History 680? I'm kinda worried about the last one.

680 isn't stellar, but it isn't horrible either... your 800 and 760 will pull your 680 up, IMO

but, is there any way you may be able to retake the US history one and possibly get a 700+? it could look a little better (but again, the 800 and 760 may negate that 680)

to the OP: yes, SAT II's are very important, possibly more important than the SAT I since the II's test what you've learned in high school vs. your reasoning

Should I retake any of these?

French: 720
Math II: 720
Biology: 730
Chemistry: 690 (die!)

^ maybe chemistry, but you have 3 II's already that are above 700.. i think you may be fine, but I'm not completely certain. anyone else have an opinion on this?

Do they only count your top 3 sat IIs? I had lit at 670 and 590 (I got sick during both of them and fell asleep during the 2nd one) :P

Well, if you're Navajo at all, you're a shoe-in haha.

Hmm, my SAT IIs are overall kind of iffy.

790 Bio E
760 World History
750 Spanish
680 Chem
640 Math I (took freshman year, and this is absolutely abysmal)

Does Harvard only care about the top three? My top three are good, but the rest are... atrocious.

i heard that for the ivies, you have to score 750+

750+ on two tests and 700+ on the third one is usually a good rule of thumb

Is 750+ on three tests, and absolute crap on the other two considered to be okay?

Harvard considers your highest scores, and tells the world that it does so every year in the Harvard viewbook.

<a href="http://www.admissions.college.harvard.edu/utilities/electronic_resources/viewbook/Rollo0809_GuideApplying.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://www.admissions.college.harvard.edu/utilities/electronic_resources/viewbook/Rollo0809_GuideApplying.pdf</a>

And Harvard takes care to answer a frequently asked question in another section of the viewbook by pointing out it doesn't have strict minimum score requirements for any applicant.

<a href="http://www.admissions.college.harvard.edu/utilities/electronic_resources/viewbook/Rollo0809_Q&A.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://www.admissions.college.harvard.edu/utilities/electronic_resources/viewbook/Rollo0809_Q&A.pdf</a>

Good luck in your applications.

750 Spanish is effing beastly, considering you're up against natives.

Well, I don't think I want to retake US History. The main reason is that the last two years of history I've taken have been more world focused (Oops...). I took a history class on Latin America and this year it's 20th Century World Topics, which is mostly Europe. I guess I could have saved myself a lot of trouble and just took World History for the SAT II.

I took 6 subject tests, but only scored well on 3 of them. What should I do?

-List only the highest 3 on the app, since those are the only ones Harvard will consider
-List all 6 and explain my 3 poor scores (I took those tests freshman year and bombed them)
-List all 6, give no explanation and assume my low scores won't be held against me

Right now, I have all my scores listed and an explanatory blurb in the "Additional Info" section. Is that overkill?

"-List all 6, give no explanation and assume my low scores won't be held against me"

That's the credited response because

a) the application form that Harvard uses, the Common Application, shows the date the test was taken (as does your score report from College Board) and

b) Harvard has announced that it gives you the benefit of your best scores.

Whew! Thanks, tokenadult. I was really worried about that :)

hahaha, I am pretty sure that if you have a 750+ for 3 subject tests then the other 2 (which you are considering absolute crap are 700+ (?) ). Don't worry, you'd be fine if they consider only your highest scores: ahem important quote:
