I am studying in a CBSE board school planning to apply to universities this year
The class 11 marks of students in my school is very low as my school curriculum is more difficult as compared to that of other schools.
Will colleges assume that the standard of the school is low or will they assume that the curriculum is tough if the class average is low ?
Also how much importance do they give to school marks ?

School marks are very important. They ask you for a class rank to gauge your relative performance among peers. Also, your counselor should write about the difficulty and rigor (there is a space for that)

Hey Dkdgr8

A lot of students come up with the same query to me. The syllabus takes a leap from 10th to 11th and this is the same, be it Science, Commerce or Humanities. However, 11th Finals are one of the most important, if not the most important grades for admissions in the US, and that is why everyone is recommended to finish their junior year with strong grades.

What I would suggest is ask your school counselor to create a school profile and mention about the tough curriculum. Also, what Heythere7 suggested is right. Another way for the adcoms to know about your academic potential is your school rank. So, even if you have a 60% for instance but you finish in the top 15% of your class, adcoms would know you took a very challenging course and that the grades were deflated. Also, ask your school counselor to mention it in her LOR (Letter of Recommendation).

Hope I was of some help!
Cheers!

Nah !! the 11th results are of examination conducted by your school/college. It dont have much importance. But your 10th, 12th, and PSA results surely have a lot of value. About your 11th result, Your rank among your classmates would matter… but not much… It’s mainly your 10th and 12th…

Well, my school is CBSE, and everything is being converted to grades before uploading it to the Common App. But make sure your counselor mentions your class rank as a measuring stick to gauge how hard your curriculum is. 11th is important, but also important are your 9th and 10th, 12th mid term, ECs, SATs and essays. Admissions are generally holistic and not focused on marks like in Indian colleges.
