importance/prestigiousness of who's who and national honor society?

i received these things in the mail, but i was wondering just how small the percentageof students who received this was? is it truly a prestigious honor, and should i bother paying them to send recs to certain colleges for me?

a LOT of people get these distinctions. it's def not worth your money ot send the recs to colleges.

Lol Who's Who is a gimmick.

Don't order anything. Don't note the awards on your college applications.

Adcoms would have a negative reaction to either one. They are just scams to get your money.

I know they're ridiculous, but should we not put them down at all?

If they are ridiculous and anyone can have them just by paying money, then why put them down? I think an applicant diminishes themselves by having them listed.

Well, I agree with the point that Who's Who is a scam. I agree 100 percent... but NHS?! I dunno how it goes at other schools, but it's not a blowoff at my school. There's a big induction in the fall... maybe 50 juniors and about 100 seniors (50 new ones in addition to the ones who were inducted in as juniors) and there's monthly meetings and LOADS of community service requirements to stay in it. You have to have so many in school volunteer hours and so many community volunteer hours... yeah. So, if I get inducted this fall I'm definitely putting it down!!!

Who's Who... I got the letter. I'd never pay $40 to put that down on anything.

What about National Honor Roll, though? I was inducted into Quill and Scroll at the end of last year (along with a few of my fellow editors, all handpicked by our advisor) and today I was sent a NHR letter that said I'm being inducted into NHR because I was inducted into Quill and Scroll. What's this one about???? It specifically says that I do not have to pay a single dime.

Wait, National Honor Society is legit. Whos who isnt tho.

National Honors Society is at school.

Who's Who? what?

National Honor Roll is useless as well.

Eh, useless, perhaps... but free. Unless someone has NOT been accepted into U of choice b/c they've done it, I guess there's no real harm.

National Honor Roll and Who's Who are scams..
National Honor Society is something entirely different.

National Honor Society is at school, right?

that it is...

It is useless; in other words, it will not supplement your college application in any way, shape, or form. Also, you run the risk of being perceived as naive by adcoms--that definitely does not increase your likelihood of being accepted.

Why bother mentioning an "award" that will not benefit you, but most likely reflect poorly on your character?

If you have already paid for Who's Who or National Honor Society, then you may feel that you want to include it on your app just to get something out of it. If you do, you will be perceived as being naive. The two are too well known for anyone to take them seriously at adcoms.

Toss it all in the trash can...and don't bother mentioning.

NHS is good. Especially if you can do something in it. I was on the executive committee at my school.

I'm sorry, I typed National Honor Society when I meant to type National Honor Roll.

That's the thing, though. NHR doesn't cost anything. According to the letter, I am "inducted" because I was also inducted (through my school) into Quill and Scroll. All I have to do for NHR is tell them they can put my name in some book. No personal information... just my name and my involvement in the school and community. Then it gives a press release to local newspapers or something.

Well, regardless, I'll ask my particular schools when I go for interviews. If they say it's a scam, I won't put it down. I know it won't be a deciding factor in college, obviously, but it's decoration. And in a strict admissions process I don't think decoration is a bad thing.
