Who's Who and National Honor Roll - do they count??

do who's who among american hs students and the national honor roll count as legit "honors" or are they just bs honors that try to make money by selling you their books?

They are "pay and you can be in them" honors. They don't really count for much.

well, you dont have to pay to be in nat'l honor roll...

I have the same question. I paid to be in National Society Of High School Scholars last year.

Is this any good for colleges like UMich, BU, Binghamton, and Stonybrook? I know it won't count much, but I don't have many honors/awards. So is this worth putting? Is there a possibility where it can HURT my chances at these schools?

The above things are not notable honors.

But I won't have any honors to put on my application...

Better than putting an honor that they might laugh at.

Darn! There goes my 45 bucks, and 15 bucks for the stupid T-Shirt!! HAHA.

Haha lil_killer129, same here, I joined the National Society of High School Students too, thinking it was something I could put on my college application. Luckily I didn't pay for anything, well not any that I remember, hopefully.

abcdef12, ME TOO ME TOO. not many awards and honors, thought about putting those until I came on CC and realized what an idiot I was. OH WELL!

so they're really pathetic honors? if i just put it on there to make myself feel less inadequate....

btw, how do they get your name for these things? i didn't pay them anything (whose who and nhr)

bump .

There are a million places they can get your name. You don't have to pay - they just hope you will buy the souvenirs. Sorry to say, they are utterly useless for college admissions, and it would actually look WORSE to put them than to leave them off.

don't put these things on your app. it will make you look ridiculous because they are absolutely worthless. an adcom may look at this as a sign of desperation.

yet they do have really official looking sites and everything...

whos who is my only award along with spanish honor society for one year...LOL should I put it or no?

0w9uigfgfvhb

don't put it.
the only regular honors i had were AP scholar with distinction, NHS, National merit commended, honor roll. I didn't put some stupid who's who's, Come on, Even ur school honor roll is more reliable than who's who or national honor roll

is nhs an honor or a club?

So should you list National Honor Societies (NHS, Spanish, Math, Drama) as actual academic awards or NOT?

I am like the other poster above...without these I have NO academic awards (except honor roll and a few awards I received for individual classes).

jcr182:

The National Honor Society (not Honor Roll) is an honor. Some schools have gotten slack about it, but in most, you have to meet standards not only of academic excellence, but character, leadership and service as well. Colleges recognize it as an honor.

abcdef12

An official looking website means nothing, sad to say!
