Bucky…

That is from the Alabama College of Engineering website.

YES, YES, YES…if you are an eng’g or Comp Sci major AND you have an ACT 30 and a 3.5 GPA, then you get TWO merit scholarships …

First scholarship from the univ…2/3 tuition

Second scholarship from the Col of Eng’g…1/3 tuition PLUS $2500

So…the net result is a FULL TUITION scholarsh PLUS $2500 per year.

These are ASSURED for stats…MUST apply before Dec 1st. The apps are LIVE now. Get your app in now, you’ll be accepted in a couple of weeks, you’ll have your awards in hand, and then you can relax while your other schools process their apps.

(if you have a ACT 32 or 1400 M+CR, then you get free tuition from the univ no matter what your major is. Must also have the 3.5 GPA and apply by Dec 1st).

What are you allowed to use this $2500 per year on?

Love this thread. OT slightly: Here is a link for the Academic Common Market Academic Common Market - Southern Regional Education Board;
which allows you to search for colleges and specific degree programs which qualify for in-state tuition in other states in the region. No doubt there are others in different parts of the country, but for southeastern states this is an eye-opener. Unfortunately, Texas only participates in graduate programs.

The University of Arkansas in Fayetteville has raised the automatic OOS tuition waver requirements, while reducing the award from 100%, for its Non Resident Tuition Award (NRTA) effective Fall 2013, and added a fee as well, but still a good deal: [Non-Resident Tuition Award | Academic Scholarship Office | University of Arkansas](http://scholarships.uark.edu/1243.php)

My HS senior son has just decided against engineering (he’s just not math-y enough) and now wants to go in another direction for applied physical science heading eventually toward an MS in geosciences / geochemistry / hydrogeology / environmental chemistry or geology (non-petroleum, in other words) and we are now looking for OOS BS programs with automatic awards for his 32 ACT and 3.4 UW / 3.8 W GPA. Many thanks in advance.

What are you allowed to use this $2500 per year on?

You can use it for whatever you want. Typically, since tuition is covered, students use the $2500 per year towards housing, meal plan, or books.

The money just gets added to the student’s acct. Since students have other charges on their bill (housing, meal plans, etc), the 2500 usually goes towards that.

My son (a senior at Bama) lives off campus, so he gets the money directed to his checking acct and uses it towards rent.

well, your son would get Free Tuition at Bama for his 32 ACT and 3.8 weighted GPA (Bama accepts weighted GPAs on the transcript). The free tuition is ASSURED and is for ANY major.

It is the Presidential Scholarship, but must apply BEFORE Dec 1st and submit the scholarship app as well (it’s a formality, but must submit that a as well.). Your child also qualifies for the Honors College and can live in Honors housing if desired.

An out-of-state first-time freshman student who meets the December 1st scholarship priority deadline, has a 32-36 ACT or 1400-1600 SAT score [critical reading and math scores only] and at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA will be selected as a Presidential Scholar and will receive the value of out-of-state tuition for four years.

Wow! Thanks, mom2collegekids - that’s amazing. We’ll have to plan a trip there. The Honors housing and college may be just the thing to give him a “smaller” experience within the bigger campus. Has your son had a good experience there?

Both of my kids have had an amazing experience there. One graduated a year ago (Applied Math) and is in a PhD program at an elite school.

My younger son is a rising senior, Chemical Eng’g, but also pre-med, so he’s got his med school apps submitted and now we’re waiting all that out.

Yes, do schedule a campus visit online…then send an email to the Honors College…(email addresses below)…

In the email include:

Student’s name and contact info

Date and time of the Campus tour that you’ve reserved.

GPA and test scores (include likely NMSF if applicable)

Likely majors*

Career interests (including med, law, etc)

I think I looked through them all and didn’t see this one. I actually started through the public school list of top ECE programs to try to assess which higher-end public schools helped out OOS students and which did not, but it got overwhelming. I remember two things: 1 Michigan was terrible – OOS tuiton is quite high and there seemed to be no OOS support. 2. Ohio State was much lower OOS tuition ($25,445) and they had this:

National Buckeye Scholarship for non-Ohio residents

Award amount
$12,000 ($48,000 four–year value)

Criteria
Ohio State is committed to enrolling a diverse and talented student population. The National Buckeye Scholarship is awarded on a competitive basis to non-Ohio students required to pay the out-of-state surcharge who are admitted to the Columbus campus for autumn semester. Those considered rank in the top 40 percent of their graduating classes and have ACT composite scores of 28 or higher or combined SAT Critical Reading and Math scores of 1260 or higher.

Notes:

Except where noted, the National Buckeye Scholarship can be combined with any other merit scholarships, as long as the combined total does not exceed the total cost of an Ohio State education.
This award is renewable for a maximum of eight semesters (or the equivalent) of full-time undergraduate enrollment, provided the recipient maintains a 2.5 or higher GPA (earned by no later than the end of the first year) and nonresident classification remains unchanged.

Not sure, but my interpretation is that this is a competitive scholarship and is not automatically given.

University of Alabama - Huntsville

For students enrolling as freshmen for the 2013-14 school year, UAH merit awards have indeed been drastically reduced. Out-of-state awards no longer cover either full tuition or a full ride (tuition/ room/board/books/fees) as they have for the past several years.

Does anyone know if any listed scholarships are from colleges that have an average GPA of around 3.8 unweighted and a 1960 SAT? I don’t want to go to a college too far below my scores.

As many have said, THANKS digmedia for starting the thread and Mto2CKs for the major input. If the AL schools had soccer, we would seriously consider them.

My daughter (1st year MS&T) used the info in her search, and my son (rising senior with 1420 CR=M) is using it now. I’ll start with what we know, and try to add what we have found.

Missouri Science and Technolgy (MO Rolla)

Approximate costs:
Tuition: In-state: $7,800; OOS: $21,600;
Other costs(Room/Board/etc): $12,000

Excellence Scholarship: $5,500(In-State)*, $11,000 (OOS)

Trustees’ Scholarship: $4,000 (In-State)*, $10,000 (OOS)

Miner Scholarship: $2,000 (in-State)*, $7,000 (OOS)

Details

This used to be published in a grid that was a lot easier to figure out. In 2012 it WAS something like:

Excellence - 10.5K (top 5%, 1400 ?, 3.5 GPA)
Trustee - up to 10K (top 5%, 1320 ?, 3.25 GPA)
Miner - up to 7K (top 10%, 1250 ?, 3.0 GPA)

Now you have to use the Net Price Calculator:

[Missouri S&T Freshman Net Price Calculator](http://sfa.mst.edu/calculator/)

Using the boy’s 1420, 3.85, top 5%, but NOT a NMS, the Trustee Scholarship comes to 12,000.

There are also added scholarships that can be had with no additional application essays (SWE for girls, Alumni Sections, Dept, etc), but not guaranteed.

A great engineering school, affordably priced.

Not sure if it’s appropriate to put this as guaranteed anymore. Lots of weasel words in the awards information. I can no longer find a Net Price Calculator on their website:

JUST NOTICED THE MAY! This used to read WILL. Times are getting tougher.

striped shirt. my son is jr now and your grades/scores similar to him (and sci major also ) . we live in ny . what were you able to find out merit aid wise ? looking preferably private schools that might come down to around same price (less even better ) than our suny schools like binghamton and buffalo

This post is really useful. I have read it all and got a lot of good information. My son is Junior. He got 34 on his ACT and GPA is about 3.75. We can’t help more than $15k per year. He is interested in engineering schools mostly on west coast. We have visited Stanford and Berkeley but they are expensive and don’t give much merit scholarship. Does anyone know what are the best engineering schools giving a generous scholarship to good ACT scores on the west side?
