Still have to pay for room & board, though. (About $15,000 a year, compared to $50,000+). A presidential scholarship, which covers tuition and room & board, is awarded to a select few students with stellar SAT scores, but it is not guaranteed in any way.

TRUSTEE SCHOLARSHIP* - Four-Year Amount: $50,000 - Renewable scholarship of $12,500 per year.
VOORHEES SCHOLARSHIP* - Four-Year Amount: $46,000 - Renewable scholarship of $11,500 per year.
CHARLES CARROLL SCHOLARSHIP* - Four-Year Amount: $42,000 - Renewable scholarship of $10,500 per year.
PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIP* - Four-Year Amount: $32,000 - Renewable scholarship of $8,000 per year.
*A student is eligible for only one of these scholarships and it will be awarded at the time of acceptance to Carroll University. These amounts do not increase from year to year.

Just a note…

A larger amount of scholarship may not make a school more affordable if the COA is much higher.

I know that’s obvious, but some get mesmerized by scholarship amounts and don’t process that a $25k scholarship at a school that has a COA $52k is not as good as a $20k scholarship at a school with a COA of $35k.

Also, if your scholarship is not larger than your “need” (COA minus EFC = “need”), then a scholarship may only reduce your aid. For a scholarship to effectively reduce EFC, then the scholarship must be larger than “need” so it can cut into EFC.

Also keep in mind that “dollar amount scholarships” typically do NOT increase as tuition increases. So, a $15k scholarship that covers nearly half of the tuition may only be covering about 1/3 of the tuition by the time you’re a senior.

However, many schools that award “full tuition” or “half tuition” scholarships will increase the amount as tuition rises. Check each school for details.

Thanks sk8rmom! I will def post on the SUNY board. I am looking more for an urban campus, I liked SUNY Geneseo except for the rural area. The price is great though and a good possibility.

These Fordham scholarships mentioned in post #101 use the word “may”, so they do not look an automatic tuition full ride.

THE FORDHAM SCHOLARSHIP FOR SEMIFINALISTS IN THE NATIONAL MERIT, NATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT, OR HISPANIC RECOGNITION COMPETITIONS

Semi-finalists and finalists in the National Merit, National Achievement, or Hispanic Recognition competition who are also in the top 10 percent of their high school class may receive this award. This scholarship augments other gifts or grants to cover full tuition for courses taken at Fordham University less the Federal Pell Grant, state awards (for example, New York State Tuition Assistance Program [TAP] and/or scholarship, or other state grants), and one-half of all gift aid received from all other sources.

^^^^
I think Fordham has a “top 10% of graduating class” req’t, but I know someone who wasn’t top 10% (close to, but not 10%) and got the scholarship anyway.

I don’t know any NMF who’s applied to Fordham and hasn’t gotten the scholarship. I wonder if Fordham just puts “may” as a protection in case one year they end up with too many applicants.

I know another school who just had to discontinue their Nat’l Hispanic scholarship because they got an unaffordable number of students last year. These big national scholarships are expensive and the money has to come from somewhere.

from what ive heard, schools that use the word “may” usually give out the scholarships on a first-come-first-serve basis, and schools that use “minimum qualifications” or something like that give them out on a competitive basis

bumping…any new ones you’ve found?

Adding to post #100, I recently found SUNY Albany’s scholarship page. Awards range from $4K (instate) to $6K (OOS):

[University at Albany - SUNY - Merit Awards](http://www.albany.edu/admissions/merit_awards.php)

*from what ive heard, schools that use the word “may” usually give out the scholarships on a first-come-first-serve basis, and schools that use “minimum qualifications” or something like that give them out on a competitive basis *

I don’t know if that’s a true guideline. Either one could be competitive. However, I agree that applying early (showing interest!) has its advantages for any competitive scholarship.

sk8rmom…thanks for keeping up with the SUNYs. While their scholarships may seem small, they actually are quite good because the SUNYs are low priced to begin with - even for OOS.
