IMPORTANT: Links to AUTOMATIC/GUARANTEED Merit Scholarships

I suppose it is not worded that everyone who is eligible is also automatically awarded, but everyone with a minimum GPA of 2.0 is eligible for some type of merit award.

mom2collegekids, just saw your response to my comment re scholarship weekends. After our horrendous experience at Belmont Abbey College (will post about it sometime, when I simmer down, LOL!), I am sooo over scholarship weekends!

Turns out both App State and UNC Asheville do make the kids go through that stuff. Western Carolina, bless their hearts, does not. They gave DS a “half-ride” (is that a term?) right out of the blue.

UNC Asheville has scholarships ranging from $1,000 to full ride. (There are only two full rides.) They make the kid go to the scholarship weekend and run the whole grueling gamut of interviews even if he/she will get only the $1,000 scholarship. Ugh. (Still gonna do it, though…want to see the campus; plus, every little bit helps. :)) App State offers a number of full rides, so it’s not so bad…but still!

Bama is looking better and better all the time. :)

Ave Maria University in Florida doles out automatic aid based entirely on SAT scores. They gave DS $14,000 per year. (If his scores had been a little higher, he would have received $15,000.)

For us, it’s still not anough to cover COA, and our assets (darn it) rule out need-based aid. So, it looks as if Ave Maria is not an option for us, which is too bad. :(

Western Carolina University also gives out automatic aid (no interviews, etc., required). Their top award is $6K, which may not sound like much, but it covers half of the very modest COA for in-state students. Definitely a possibility, alhough we are still leaning toward Bama. :)

oops, too late to edit typo (“anough”)…oh well!

Bumping so the next crop of students will find this more easily!

Agnes Scott college in Atlanta/Decatur–a very good women’s college–has good merit, including a number of guaranteed awards for both Georgia and non-Georgia Residents:

http://agnesscott.edu/admission/undergraduate/financialaid/agnessolution.aspx

“The Agnes Advantage Award”
Agnes Scott offers The Agnes Solution, guaranteed merit awards of $63,000 over four years for qualified students.

If you are a Georgia resident who qualifies for the Georgia HOPE Scholarship, you are eligible to receive The Agnes Solution. More information about the HOPE program may be found at [GAcollege411 - Home](http://www.GAcollege411.org).

If you are a resident of a state other than Georgia and have a 3.6 GPA and a 1300 SAT (math and verbal) or 29 on the ACT, you qualify for The Agnes Solution.

They also have other competitive awards which may require the dreaded scholarship overnight and interview, including full tuition, room and board for top students, which D was offered (she hasn’t accepted yet, but is seriously considering–while we parents cross our fingers!). But anyone invited for this overnight is already guaranteed about 18K annual award, so not a huge hardship!

http://agnesscott.edu/admission/undergraduate/financialaid/agnes-scott-scholarships.aspx

Maryville College (Tennessee) offers “automatic” scholarships based on certain combinations of GPA/ SAT or ACT scores.

Tuition/room/board/ fees are $39,158

Here is the link to the list of scholarships:

[Financial Aid: Scholarships & Awards for First-Year Students | Maryville College](Scholarships & Awards for First-Year Students - Maryville College)

bump to the top of the list. Lets keep it going through 2012!!

[Undergraduate Scholarship Office | Scholarships for Nonresidents | West Virginia University](<a href=“Scholarships | Financial Aid | West Virginia University”>Scholarships | Financial Aid | West Virginia University)

West Virginia University, merit aid for OOS students, excellent value as COA for OOS is roughly $26,000-$27,000/year.

Everyone keep in mind that many schools review/change/modify their merit scholarships at this time and then announce what they will be for the next Fall’s applicants.

So, anything posted now may not be “set in stone”.

Hopefully, the schools won’t change their scholarships, but there is a possibility, so keep looking at the actual webpages so that you know what the latest is.

However, once the app season opens, a school shouldn’t be changing their awards.

Thanks for this thread 2011

Auburn has changed its scholarship requirements for Class of 2012. Much higher SAT scores needed and eliminated merit based scholarship to National Hispanic Recognition Scholars.

Bama has posted its assured scholarships for this upcoming 2011 app season…

I really like this thread!

I agree this thread is great and it is nice to see schools that will be exact in what the requirements are for various scholarships.

Yes, it is nice to know that there are some non-competitive assured merit for stats.

When our kids were applying, we didn’t like being bothered with competitive scholarships - they often required travel for interviews, missing class, etc…all for just a small chance of winning. It’s fine to apply to a couple just to see, but since you can’t depend on getting a competitive scholarship, it can’t be one of your safeties.

Thank you so much for this thread! For the Alabama scholarship, you would only have to pay 1/3 of the out of state tuition, correct?

^^^

Depends on what scholarship you qualify for.

If you have an ACT 30, then you only pay 1/3 of tuition for an OOS student. The tuition for an OOS student is about $21k…so the scholarship is for about $14k. So, you only pay $7k for tuition.

If you have an ACT 32+, then you don’t pay any tuition.

Those 2 scholarships do increase in value if tuition increases. :)

So…what are your stats? And will you be testing again? Bama accepts the test scores for the ACT up to October of senior year…and for the SAT up to November of senior year. No super-scoring.

Bama’s school and scholarship apps go online in July. So apply then. And if your scores go up by the above deadlines, then your scholarship will increase.

Of course, if you have an ACT 30 and you major in engineering OR computer science, then you get the full tuition scholarship AND 2500 per year.
