Important Question

Is it true that American colleges only consider your Junior and Senior year in H.S ? If no, what other years are significant?

Most colleges will look at 9th through 11th grade, plus however much of 12th grade (1st term or 1st semester) they have by application time. Junior year is considered the most important full academic year that colleges look at, with first term senior grades being equally important. 10th grade is less important than 11th, and 9th is less important than 10th. Some colleges don't consider 9th grade at all.

Why, you didn't like the previous answer? Let me repeat - most colleges will consider all 4 years of high school. A few (and you'd have to check their individual websites) may discount 9th grade grades. I don't know of a single school that does not consider 10th grade grades.

I'll answer, too -- just to make you feel better!

all four years count at the majority of US schools. there are several schools where 9th grade is not used in the calculation of the GPA, but that does not mean they do not look at it.

Thanks. But are you understanding what I'm saying, when they put your H.S GPA into their admissions system, what is calculated to come to this conclusion. Is it my 9th - 12th grade GPA's averaged, is it just my Senior Year? Etc?

You are not understanding what we are saying. Most colleges count all four years (actually, 3 1/2 years) in calculating the GPA. A handful do not include freshman year grades. Everyone includes sophomore grades. No one uses only Junior year.

Again -- I will chime in here. Your GPA is calculated based on your semester (not quarter or year) grades for 9th, 10th, 11th and the first semester of 12th grade.

There are a small handful of schools that do not count 9th grade -- so the GPA for those schools is based on semester grades for 9th, 10th, 11th and the first semester of 12th grade.

I am not sure why you keep asking the same question -- if you are concerned because you had horrible grades in 9th and 10th grade, but then got serious and your grades are better -- then you do need to be concerned. Although schools like to see an upward trend in grades, a low GPA will put you out of the running of most selective schools. If you are aiming for HYPS, then your gradepoint average better be a least a 3.6 FOR 9th THROUGH 12TH GRADE.

reko -- I read some of your pasts posts, so I think I understand the confusion now.

If you will post your letter grades for both semesters of 9th, 10th and 11th grade -- I will figure out your GPA for you.

all the schools you are looking at will be looking at GPA for 9th through 12th grade.

Most of the schools you are looking for are in the southeast -- have you considered applying to schools elsewhere? The fact that you are international and black my be more favorable in an area of the country where blacks are not well-represented. There are many good schools out there!

One caveat to hsmomstef's post: If your school reports only year-long grades for year-long courses (as does my d's school) then the GPA is calculated on the basis of that grade. It doesn't necessarily need to be calculated by semester.

good point -- I didn't realize that some schools only do year long grades. It will depend on how your school reports grades.

Hmm I see, thanks.
