Hey, so I was just wondering what people think. I'll be in a quad in the fall. On move in day.. do people just grab whatever bed they want? Or do they kind of wait around for the other roommates?

Can anyone tell me from their experiences with this?

Essentially, yes. I lived in a triple my freshman year, and one of my roommates had gotten there before me and claimed a bed. I was the first to move into my quad sophomore year, and I did the same. It depends on the roommates, though.

Just try not to do what S’ roommates did his freshman year. Not only did 2 of them grab the best beds, but they also grabbed the best closet (the large walk-in next to the bathroom), the best located desks, etc. S didn’t want to make a fuss over it, but, needless to say, this foursome didn’t last the year.

It depends. If you are girls, then they plan everything out ahead of time. If you are guys, then it is first come, first serve. lol

Don’t forget that there are many freshmen students that move in ahead of time. All the students that sign up for a GW adventure week and the engineering students- all move in a week early. So you may be the very first student in line on move in day and find out that you are the last roommate to move in.

With my DS, they just picked out beds as they moved in. One roommate requested an extra long bed (longer than the regular extra long beds) so he got that bed and it only fit in one place in the room too.

I can’t say that the large walk in closet next to the bathroom is always ideal. In my son’s case, the bathroom was off the closet and the closet had a tendency to be more humid from the showers. Plus everyone is going in and out of that closet all the time to get to the bathroom. The smaller closet was actually the better closet.

no offense shellfell, but do you blame the 2 roomates for taking the best beds and closets? …it would make no sense to get there first and say, hey, lets pick the worse desk locations and closets just bc we feel like being nice to the other roomates. if such things cause such problems make sure u arrive at the drom for move in earlier and be the first one there. thats what i did and of course i made it so that i had the best beds desks and closets. such things shouldnt be the end all for roomates…its college and students are no longer in 8th grade

Yup - it’s a free for all. Do whatever you can to be the first to move in, and quickly put 1 bag down on your bed and 1 on your desk. Seriously - pick up your key at the earliest possible time.

After living in a Thurston quad a few years ago, make sure you choose the non-bunk bed in the corner of the room and the closet attached to the shower. If neither of those are free, choose the bunk bed. The non-bunk bed in the middle of the room is miserable–you are literally in the middle of the room.

Good luck!

gwstudent- Do you have any advice for move in day itself? Like how’s the traffic handled and how well does that work? And do you have any secrets to being the first to the dorm? haha. I’ll also be in a Thurston quad.

Move in day at Thurston is absolutely crazy. The front of the building (Fst) is a big drop-off zone where you unload your car and then have to drive away. It’s best if you bring 2 people with you–1 to help you run stuff to your room and 1 to stay with the rest of your stuff and car. There are tons of people there to direct you, and even volunteers that will help you carry your stuff.

They have large moving carts to use, but you obviously can’t bring them up stairs too easily. A line for the 2 elevators forms and can easily take 30 minutes until your turn in the elevator. If you have a capable parent/helper, I would run things up the stairs (regardless of floor…seriously!). The earlier you get there the easier the process will be.

If you want to be first in your room, get to the key depot at the earliest possible time and go straight to Thurston and get your stuff up. Some people do those before-school trips and would be moved in already, but most people don’t go on those.

Once your stuff is up, park your car somewhere and then unpack. If you are actually just that awesome it should be no problem for you haha. good luck!

Is your dorm assignment for the semester or year?
