Do you go shopping and just buy clothes and shoes ever for fun? Or is that all over after high school? Do colleges students usually have any time or money for that?

Just for fun? Like just to spend money? If I see something I like I usually buy it on the spot, but most of my purchases come during the end of spring through summer, since all the big stores like barneys, nordstroms, neimans, ect. have all their big sales.

If you have a job and manage your time well, then you’ll have money and time.

Or do you just pretty much say goodbye to buying a bunch of cute clothes and shoes in college? Is that normal? (I’m a girl btw…)

[see previous post]

You’re quite obviously a girl, by the way. I haven’t yet met a male who refers to his attire as “cute clothes and shoes.”

Yeah, probably not…guess I didn’t have to mention that.

It’s all good, I was just making an observation. :P

My D at Harvard still goes shopping , but not as much .If you have lots of money ,you will keep shopping wherever you go to school !

You can go shopping, but a lot of times you may want to spend money on other things. You’ll have plenty of time and everyone’s financial situation is different. You’ll need some cute clothes and stuff for going out anyway, although I don’t buy a lot of clothes during the year. I don’t know why you would think college students don’t shop…?

I don’t think that…it’s just that I went shopping today and came home with some stuff, and then my dad gave me a lecture on how I can’t do so much of that in college, and he made it sound like ALL college students just wear everything the same they had from high school. I want to get some new stuff for college too because I had to wear uniforms in high school (actually since 1st grade- 12 years of uniforms!), and this is the first year since kindergarten that I get to wear real clothes to school!!!

I understand your frustration now that you explain your clothing situation. If you have the money, you’ll see soon enough that there are things that will take priority over buying clothes. When you do shop for clothes, shop smart and during sales.

As a college student, depending on where you live and your cost of living, you will find that clothes-shopping isn’t necessarily the first thing on your list. You need food. Cleaning supplies. Laundry money. Transportation money. Emergency money. Etc. I think I’m making my point.

I’m not saying you can’t treat yourself to something nice every once in a while, but what I am saying is to make sure you weigh your priorities correctly first.

I never went shopping in high school. Coming from a poor family, I’ve always been super money-conscious and it makes me sick to spend more than $10 on a pair of jeans.

That being said, I have about $560 in graduation money, so I was thinking about going shopping for clothes for college, since I probably won’t in college. All of the money I make will probably be going to books and tuition…

I’m excited to get to wear what I want in college too. I didn’t have a uniform, but we had a super strict dress code. Like, we couldn’t wear t-shirts (not even school ones… and I have about fifteen school t-shirts. Jeez.)

Yeah you can still go shopping. Personally, I prefer to wait until breaks and let people who haven’t seen me in awhile buy me clothes/give me money for them. Mostly I ended up spending my clothing money on cheap club clothes and makeup.

You’ll get a lot of free shirts

But spending money… for fun… on clothes??? You lost me.

I guess if money and daddy are throwing bank your way its better you spend it on shoes and clothes than alcohol and drugs

So for fun in college, people don’t go shopping much, people just party instead? I’m not really a party person…

I think there’s a lot more partying than shopping at many schools, but you can totally shop if you want. You’ll find people who aren’t really into partying.

Also, you probably wont be shopping from 10 pm to 4 am on weekends…

But most kids are strapped for cash in college, so they wont be shopping as much, especially not like high school if your parents ever paid for clothes

OP, where are you going to school? A lot of schools don’t have a lot of places to shop for cute clothes nearby and so shopping isn’t a favorite activity. Also, consider that your dorm room may not have a lot of space for extra clothes, etc…most rooms don’t have an abundance of storage space.

And maybe your father didn’t mean to be mean to you but consider that college is a huge expense that your family didn’t have to shoulder until now, and he is a little worried about unnecessary frivolous spending…he of course wants you to have cute clothes, etc, but maybe you should discuss his budget expectations of you now, before you head away to school. You should invite him out to coffee or ice cream (your treat would be doubly nice!) and have an adult discussion with him about budgeting while you are at school. What money will your parents be giving you, if any…on what schedule…and for what expenses. Will you be expected to work during the school year to supplement your expenses, or just during summer/school breaks? Ask your parents what budgeting tips they can give you, and ask the same question of older friends who have been away to college and are home for the summer.

Illinois Wesleyan U- Bloomington, IL and there are 2 malls right in town

Actually, I went to a private high school that had tuition as much as an in-state university, so we’ve basically paid for an in-state university already, now a private college. I’ve been in private school my whole life- my parents have paid tuition since pre-school years (2 years pre-school, kindergarten, grade 1-12, so 15 years of tuition already- although it wasn’t quite as much per year in earlier years!)

Yeah, I think we’re going to do that.

Maybe some of this was just a really dumb question…So I guess it’s normal to not buy a lot of new things in college and just wear stuff you already had…
