In-state acceptance %: W&M vs UVA

W&M Admissions,

Can you share in-state acceptance % data for W&M for the class of 2014, and 2015? In looking at the SCHEV website, it appears that despite UVA having a marginally lower overall admit rate (IS and OSS combined), in-state applicants actually face a slightly worse prospect for gaining admissions to W&M. The oldest 3 data sets (for both W&M and UVA) come from SCHEV while the latest 2 data sets (for UVA) come from the Peabody blog.

Thanks so much!

freshman in Fall of: W&M UVA Source
2011 ? 44.8% UVA Peabody
2010 ? 42.4% UVA Peabody
2009 38.9% 44.9% SCHEV
2008 42.3% 47.0% SCHEV
2007 43.7% 47.2% SCHEV

We have not yet released data for the Class of 2015 yet. We generally do that just before Day for Admitted Students so unfortunately I’m not at liberty to provide that data just yet. Last year our in-state admit rate was about 37-38% by the time all was said and done. Remember, W&M’s incoming class is significantly smaller than UVA’s and thus we cannot admit as many students.

Thank you W&M admissions! I’ll check back in around mid April for the stats on the class of 2015. That should be about the same time W&M announces it’s 2011-2012 tuition increases! So, lot’s of new stats coming at the same time!

Any guesses about how much of a tuition increase there will be?

If previous years in recent memory are any indication, they have pretty much stayed just below the 10% mark for in-state and around 7-8% for out-of-state. My guess is at least 9% for in-state.

Past 5 years for OOS (each semester):
2006-2007: 12,524
2007-2008: 13,467 (+7.5%)
2008-2009: 14,663 (+8.9%)
2009-2010: 15,482 (increased to 15,782 mid-year) (+5.6% / +7.6%)
2010-2011: 16,882 (+7.0%)

Does the tuition increase mean that rates will rise above what has been already given to newly admitted students in their FA packages and Accepted Students Packages? O.o

Bandgeek, yes, the tuition has not been adjusted for 2011-2012 yet and will likely rise for in state and possibly out of state. However, I would not worry too much for out of state–if OOS is increased much more, there will be little difference between W&M’s tuition and the tuition of a private school. No doubt prospective students will be lost–I know I cannot continue to attend if OOS COA rises above the $50,000 mark.

We certainly anticipate that tuition, when set, will be increased.

Bandgeek, the figures given to you in your admit pack are tuition figures for 2010-2011 and that is noted in your admit pack. The financial aid package you’ve received is an estimate. It will be re-worked once 2011-2012 tuition is set.

Skydancer, it would be unlikely that tuition will increase to $50,000. this year for OOS. That would represent nearly a 20% increase in tuition. However, keep in mind that our peers’ tuition rates will also increase so even if our OOS tuition does increase, which it likely will, we will likely still be cheaper than many of our peers.

Skydancer, that remark on ‘don’t worry if it goes up it’ might be a bit frivolous. While W&M was an attractive $10,000 below typical NE LAC’s two years ago, that gap has narrowed. With some of these schools offering $20,000 per year scholarships, the advantage goes to the LAC’s. While I am willing to pay that current difference as a father of an accepted D, any additional increase makes the decision that much more difficult, because over 4 years that $40,000 difference will likely be $50,000 in favor of the LAC. That is like paying for a year of grad school.

W&M Admission, do you know when the tuition increase will be released? I was going to send my deposit in over the weekend, but if it’s a significant change–especially if it’s not completely addressed in my FA package–I might have to change my decision. :(

I believe the tuition rates were announced in mid-May last year. They also raised tuition $300 for the spring 2010 semester over the fall 2009 semester. Several other VA schools did the same if I remember right.

Yes W&M Admission, that would be a huge increase. I was refering more to over the course of four years than this year alone. W&M is a great value and I’d live in a cardboard box for 4 years to attend if I had to.

Bandgeek- They will adjust your aid as tuition rises so you should be ok! :)

bandgeek, we expect tuition for 2011-2012 to be released late next week or early the following week after the Board of Visitors meets although we cannot guarantee that. However, financial aid packages are adjusted accordingly once tuition is released.

Skydancer, glad your passion for W&M extends to cardboard-box living though we hope it doesn’t come to that!

W&M has been a tougher admit than UVirginia for the past 30 years. Currently just a bit behind W&L for toughest in the state.

^^^ Haha, yet everyone who gets wait-listed/rejected by UVA gets into W&M and not the other way around

^Random statement. D had friend who was accepted at UVA, USC and others and was denied at W&M. They are both equally selective.

We are lucky in VA to have the schools we have. My son is having a tough time deciding between W&M, UVA and W&L. All are great schools and each has its own personality.

W&M is a little tougher for instate students because less of its student body is instate (64% compared to UVA’s 71%)

Other than that they’re probably about equal. I guess UVA places more of an emphasis on GPA/Class rank. I know plenty of people who got accepted at UVA who were denied at W&M and vice versa.

@oldUVAguard: Haha, I’ve got to make the exact same decision as your son. I’m leaning W&M; I wasn’t too wild about Lexington and found W&M to be a better fit than UVA.

@ExceptMe…I think W&M is where my son will end up too:).
