In-State tuition for Expats

I am an expat attending an international school outside my home state of Texas. Can I still get in-state tuition? Is there anything in particular you need to qualify for in-state?

You need to check the tuition policies at each Texas university & community colleges to find out whether you are considered in-state now, and whether or not it would be possible for you to qualify as in-state on your own. Each institution sets its own policy about this. In the past, some of the Texas universities granted in-state status to students who owned property in Texas, so even a fraction of an acre of land in the middle of nowhere counted. This may have changed.

It’s harder to get in-state tuition based on buying real estate now. You have to LIVE on the property now. It changed in 2011. My son squeaked in under the wire (after all the work required to get him in-state tuition, he had to drop out due to illness!).

There are exceptions for military service outside of your home state too. Are your parents in the services?

No my parents are engineers and but we still own a house in Texas and pay taxes for it.

If they would put your name on the title AND you lived in the house, it would probably work. But you should ask.

Should I check with the admission counselors at UT and other colleges?

Google using terms like these: residency requirements texas state university
and you will start to get links. You also should be able to find the information by searching with similar terms at each institution’s website.
