Independent Study APs?

Hey all, I'm new here! Hope I didn't miss another thread that already answers this question...

Anyway, I just took the AP Euro exam today (fingers crossed for a 5) after taking the class at school and am already planning for more next year. The school doesn't offer any AP foreign language classes due to lack of interest, but I was thinking about doing independent study French along with regular classes that the school does have- APUSH and AP Eng. I only found out that the independent study option existed today though so I really don't know that much about it.

What do you have to do, when do you register, how much does it cost, etc? What if no one else at my school takes this exam (and they probably won't)? Will the school proctor a test with just one person or do I have to go somewhere else?

Also- sorry for so many questions- has anyone here done this before, especially with a language, and do you think it's a wise idea?

I'd be grateful if someone can answer even a few of the questions. Or in general just clue me in. Thanks! :D

Well, I've independently studied a few AP's. The cost of the AP is still the same, $82 each. To register, you MUST talk to your AP coordinator before March something. Perferrably, talk to him or her right after Winter break. Most likely a person will proctor just for you =P. So it will just be you and the proctor for 3 hours.

Thanks, exactly the info I was looking for! I am so excited... lol, go figure.

kinda the same topic, but how realistic is it to independent study for both micro and macro econ?

Another question..what if the AP isn't offered? Do they still purchase 1 AP test just for you?

And if colleges see the APs you took, and the list of APs offered, and you don't specifically write an AP test score on the application, will they still see it?

Yes, only they will purchase (but you will pay for) the 1 AP test.

About not listing the independent AP test scores, I really don't know. I assume that you would want to send your AP scores. Once they receive the AP scores, they'll see the score. Might as well write it in. Only takes 1 character.

I'm pretty sure the college will be able to tell you have taken the additional test because all AP scores show up on one transcript no matter how many you have ever taken, and the transcript can be mailed to the college of your choice. But those are really good questions that just brought up a whole lot more in my mind. I have looked around the college board website and haven't stumbled across any answers... There has to be someplace to find this info! Any ideas?

I'm not sure, I just posted the question in the "Admissions" section.

So..I guess colleges don't even know you took the test unless you indicate the score? I don't think all school transcripts include AP scores.

Oh, when I was taking the AP Euro test yesterday it said in the student pack that all AP grades show up on one AP transcript. (That's what I meant, should have specified). Then you fill out the form on the back to tell them where to mail it. I am not sure about high school transcripts though.

If AP grades don't count for admissions (or do they?), are we just taking the exams to get college credit hours? Would an SAT II subject test be comparable or better for admissions? Which is harder?

Aw man..so you can't white out any grade or something? Because I have a really bad feeling about one AP ..

So technically colleges won't know about any grades or any test if you don't send in the AP transcript?

What if..you don't send in the AP transcript..but on the college application, you put down the scores you want to..would that work for censoring out 1 grade? Because I'm sure there will be other grades you want colleges to actually see..

For the SAT II question, I think it depends on the test. Like for the SAT II History, most people are agreeing the AP was easier. But I'm sure there are other SAT IIs where it was easier than the actual AP test.

Oh yeah, and I heard that most schools just use APs for credit, but some (Harvard maybe?) use it in admissions..I don't know either.

Do you still have the student packs from the AP tests? I can't find mine now but it had some stuff about that. It basically depends on how recent the test was but you can cancel your score or pay them not to put it on the transcript. You should probably wait for your score instead of cancelling it because who knows, it might be ok! :D If it's not, there's some procedure for leaving it off the transcript. $$$

Ahhh this forum has been so helpful already. Thanks guys

Oh that's right! On page 7, you can withhold grades from colleges, $10 per grade.
Alright this is awesome..I'll see what the grade is..but I just wanted to make sure I'd have a choice of not letting other colleges see it..just in case. Thanks :)
