hey man - u got 2 do, what u got 2 do ;)

yay!! look what I found on Duke's Website (although it means nothing to most of you):
Please be aware that in Duke's application process, SAT-I and ACT scores are not viewed as the sole measure of a student's academic ability. We also recognize that test scores from bilingual students, or students outside of a United States high school system, may reflect a student's lack of familiarity and experience with this type of standardized test. This is taken into account when applications are considered.

:)

interesting info hello.
As a word of caution, from what I understand Caltech, MIT, UPenn, etc. considers Indians as 'native english speakers' and does not consider lower score on verbal sections as a reflection of lack of familiarity with the language. Also, standardized tests - i wont be surprised if international sat score (esp. from desis around the globe) is higher than the average american sat scores.

Thats because majority( i should say 95%) of the international applicants are incredibily smart. I mean they have exceptionally high test scores and what not( thats why we apply to schools abroad). Sorry for stating the obvious, but i was bored.

Average SAT score for americans is around the 1050 mark btw... ( surprising thing is guys out score the girls which is just opposite to the situation in India where girls outscore boys every year in board examinations.

And oh by the way, best of luck for all of you for the pre-boards!!

Hi friends,
I have a question to those who are sending application materials by post from India. I have posted through speed post on 28.12.04 for the January 1 deadline. When I tracked the post through US post website, I see the parcels are still lying in customs for the last 4 days? Will the colleges reject my application?
will it be faster if the mateterials are sent through Fedex or DHL? Will it still pass through US customs? I used speed post because it was cheaper, though I paid 500 Rs. for each.
If I send by registerde post before the deadline, it may take 3 weeks, will the colleges accept that?
I had initiated this post theough never really made any post. I was however reading religiously all your posts which were very informative and helpful. My thanks to all of you.
Happy new year!!
Motso

Yay motso!! Father of the rejuvenated indian post :p wb

and it's postmark deadline! so it's okay... the speed post label will say 28 if they care to check (i think... hope... not) i wouldnt trust the tracking info tho... who knows till what stage it's updated. perhaps it's there already.

Hey man I sent all app materials through regular airmail (not even speedpost/registered) and it reached them in 6 days flat! Cost me ~Rs. 35 each packet - which is 1/15 of what you'd pay for speedpost/courier etc.... :D

I think, for few applications which are still there for me to post, I would use ordinary post!

noooo. use speed post. it does get there in less time. i'm sure it's already there and you get the custsoms thing just coz their records havent been updated or something

merc could just have gotten lucky... i wouldn't take the risk. the guy at the PO said it could take anywhere upwards of 10 days

agree with astrix + if the package gets lost somewhere, there is no way to track it. At least with a speed post or fedex, you have a tracking #, etc. to prove tht you did actually send it before the deadline

i sent evry thing by dhl reaches 3 days flat

and that would be what... 1500 bucks. pocket change :p

my dads company's account so lol

950 actually by dhl.
450 by speed post
i lost a set of transcripts that i sent by regular mail. I'm not taking any chances after that.

indian postal service doesnt seem that bad compared to Korea's. My IGCSE certificate reached me ripped up in shreds and stuffed in an envelope. i sent my recs to cornell, and it never reached them. i sent it again, and it reached them in a torn open envelope. all this by speed post.

what options do i have to send if i want to send only 1 document

FAX, if it's the kinda document which a faxing is okay for. I haven't tried tho.
