Why didn’t people here apply to JHU?
@tiwari124 I DID
@Rahulbarcafan I was just wondering why so few people have applied to JHU. I mean it is a good university . Anyways any idea what the difficulty of admission in comparison to ivy leagues?
@tiwari124 From what i’ve heard and interpreted, it is quite tough. Also demonstrated interest plays an important role. Legacy plays a very important role I am very ambivalent about there toughness to be honest.
@tiwari124 Since most Indian applicants are STEM oriented, I do not believe they pay much attention to universities that are at the low end of the ranking spectrum (as far as engineering is concerned) despite their overall prestige. Many of us apply to Ivy leagues despite their low engineering rankings [brown, Dartmouth, even Harvard!(shocker! Right?)] because of the enormous popularity that these brands merit.
@Rahulbarcafan Does demonstrated interest really hold such weight in the process? I doubt it. I think for a university as affluent as Hopkins, they look for stuff that individuals have achieved with at least a little effort, intellect and work ethic instead of a 100 phone calls that every Tom dick and Harry can make to demonstrate their “interest”.
Oh and by the way, John Hopkins can also be really stingy when it comes to aid.
Yes I was just going through the RD decision thread and found out that many people have scores hovering around 2100 and have been admitted . I did write a nice why JHU essay but still I don’t know what is a great one! Lets see what happens on the 17
@rahuilmars231 Yes I completely agree with you. Whereas JHU is very famous for some of their programs like security in computer science! I do hope this does decrease some competition though this may be a little selfish on my part. Yes from what I have seen JHU does seem to be more academic oriented instead of being prestige oriented . Maybe less people apply because it is in Baltimore . I don’t know just another guess.
@rahuilmars231 I get what you are saying. But JHU IMO looks for a combination of interest as well as achievement @tiwari124 I saw the thread and everybody was like a 2200 or 2300 . I might be wrong.
As long as the applicants have around 2200 SATs, they’ll be fine. That said, a slightly lower score wouldn’t disqualify anyone.
Anyone applied to CMU Mechanical engineering? What stats do they look for? Any idea?
@tiwari124 @Rahulbarcafan @rahuilmars231
JHU Engineering is quite selective, only 300 people and SAT average of 2300, if I recall correctly, from a thread on CC.
I applied to CS at CMU, with Math as second choice.
CMU does consider the level of the applicant’s interest, however.
@potatoheadhala Maybe that are the stats for BME but JHU has a greater admit rate and ACT average of 32. The incoming class of 2019 had 990 students admitted to the school of engineering.

@tiwari124
Maybe you’re right, probably those were for CS/BMU. But I think the given SAT range is for all applicants, not only for engineering ones.
Hey everyone! I’m currently in 11th, and will graduate high school in 2017. I had a few questions that have really been bugging me for a while, and this thread seems to have people who know what they’re talking about. So, here goes, in point form:
a) My grades in 11th have seriously gone down. From a 10 CGPA in 10th (CBSE) to a measly 77% in 11th half-yearlies, and after the finals, my aggregate won’t be higher than 85%. I have a legit reason as to why it happened, but I’m still VERY scared as to whether my dream schools (MIT, Stanford, UCB, Georgia Tech) will reject me outright after seeing my transcript.
I am also concerned because I was just rejected from SSP and I think it was because of my grades, and now I’m worried what I’m going to do in the summer.
b) I’ve taken the SAT twice, with a 2250 superscore and 2220 in a single sitting. However, I’m thinking of taking the ACT to compensate for a bad academic year. Can someone please explain to me the pros and cons of this idea?
A) Not going to sugarcoat things… a 77% is really really low for Ivies/MIT/Stanford/Berkeley (and maybe even Gtech). That being said, there are quite a few amazing state schools which dont place much importance on 11th grade marks (UMich, UIUC, UCLA, etc.), so try to make your list accordingly. If I were you, I’d strike off the ivies/MIT/Stan from my list.
B) A 2250 SAT is fine. A higher test score wont compensate for your low grades at all
^ @anotherdude your are quite wrong about UCLA! It actually places the greatest importance on the 11th grade marks!
@uclaparent9 How much SAT Score UCLA require for Computer Science? Do I have a shot at UCLA? My stats are here-http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1853790-chance-me.html#latest
I think your score is a bit low for CS. But you have a strong overall record. Perhaps a high-match.
@ThatBrownDude All schools place the highest emphasis on 11th grade marks.
For you ivys are going to be very difficult. Sorry but that’s how it is
Ahh okay, thanks for your advice guys.
Another thing, does going to a competitive summer program boost your application in any way? Or am I better off doing an internship or research during the summer?
