Just in case anyone else out there was confused/concerned about this ....... We received a letter yesterday from Indiana University's Office of Student Financial Assistance indicating that we were eligible for a small Stafford loan. My son and wife's question to me was: "Is that all we are going to receive from Indiana?" My erudite response was: "I have no idea." I called the Jacobs Schools' Admissions Office and they were closed. Well, a quick search of CC revealed that someone (OperaDad) had a similar concern at this time last year -- on the very same day!!

According to this information, and assuming that past is prologue, any performance scholarship offers will be forthcoming in a separate letter from the Jacobs School of Music. So, it's back to waiting ........

Thanks TenorDad,
We haven’t heard anything except a letter from them telling us to fax a copy of my daughter’s original social security card to the Admissions Office (not the Finaid Office, as I mistakenly did at first since the request came from them.) Apparently this is what happens if you decline to give a school your SS# when you make the initial application. But the Finaid office is not allowed to know your SS#, it has to be sent to them through admissions. Other than that, not a peep, not even about a Stafford loan…

TenorDad, actually when I got home today we found the same letter. It is also about a small Stafford loan. Back to waiting. Was someone on a different thread passing around chocolates and red wine?

Indiana wins the Best Postcard from a College Award.

S received a postcard today from Indiana that has the basic “send in your deposit” on the side with our address.

On the other side is a jeep on a road. The road sign says Bloomington 312 miles (the correct distance). On the back window of the jeep is a windowsticker with the name of his high school. On the license plate is his name.

It’s very slick.

Unfortunately, he sent them the “I’m not coming letter” a few weeks ago. But kudos to them for a great marketing dept.

S got that ‘slick’ postcard from IndianaU that MaryTN mentions also–and, on his birthday this month he got an email from the Admissions Office with a photo of the staff holding a birthday cake–fun!

The marketing department at Indiana is very creative! We recieved a ton of mail from them. Really made my son feel like they wanted him. We are still deciding on IU (Journalism) or U of California/Santa Barbara. Both schools have wonderful features. We did not get the same amount of mail from UC Santa Barbara!

In the same boat as MaryTN. S received the acceptance to Jacobs yesterday. Haven’t heard anything re an academic scholarship from the university, nor have we heard anything re a music scholarship (April 1st, maybe?). Don’t know how it may influence scholarship decisions for our S, as he is coming to IU only to do music (he graduates from Emory with a German/IntlStudies degree in May, but ‘feels the calling back to music’. He only needs the music classes(2yrs), then on to grad school(conducting). We just don’t know whether schools care as much about attracting a student of that background, as they may care to attract freshmen.

Your son already will have a bachelors? What degree or program is he pursuing at IU (I listed it as a BM on the Master List, but since it is two years, it is not a BM. Is it one of the certificate programs, and if so, please be specific so I can amend the master, and we don’t confuse posters down the road.

Additionally, if indeed it is the pursuit of a second bachelor’s, there may be very little if any funding even if he has not maxed out his Staffords. Federal aid is in the form of Stafford, Perkins and the income based grants stop after the first bachelor’s is obtained.

On top of that many schools (particularly publics) do not allow matriculation for a second bachelor’s. The privates are alot more flexible, but money may be tight there as well.

Now, there may be talent money from IU, there may not be, contingent on how they view the post bac performance pursuit.

I’m befuddled. I hope you covered all your bases (or have deep pockets).

Whatever you can provide to shed some light is appreciated.

Hi to everyone - and firstly, I want to thank all of the regular music major family posters here and on other threads because your information has helped so much in our trying to help our son through the music audition process this winter/spring. Now that I have a little experience with this first time experience with the audition process of a future college major, I feel more confident to post now and try to start helping others! My son was admitted to all of his music schools apps (6 positives) except Juilliard (just got that letter last night) and we are anxiously awaiting the music scholarship decision from Jacobs, too. Is it unrealistic to think it might come in the mail tomorrow? There is no record of it at all on One Start. Again, thanks to everyone for the generosity of your previous posts and information!

If you would care to list the other schools to which he was accepted, we would like to list them on our master acceptance thread. I am going to add what I presume is a BM in trombone performance at Indiana.

Hi BassDad - yes, it is BM Trombone Performance accepted at: Indiana U Jacobs School (still awaiting music scholarship news), Northwestern Bienen School (still waiting for FA notification), Florida State School of Music (w/music scholarship), University of Alabama (w/music scholarship), Furman University (w/music scholarship), University of S.C. (w/music scholarship). Not Accepted-Juilliard School
