"IU's new admissions policy seeks more `quality' students

Associated Press

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Aiming to catch up with its Big Ten peers, Indiana University is considering a plan to enroll more "quality" students with high SAT scores.

IU would strive over the next five years to enroll more students with high SAT scores under the admissions plan presented Friday to the IU trustees' academic affairs committee.

According to the most recent U.S. News & World Report higher education rankings, IU's freshmen SAT test scores were last in Big Ten last year.

The plan's goal is to make sure IU keeps up with Big Ten peers Purdue, Michigan State, Ohio State and Iowa in "quality indicators," test scores and high-school class rank.

But that's not good enough for some IU trustees eager to make IU one of the nation's top 30 research universities. They said IU should measure itself against the Big Ten's academic elite.

"What is the student profile of a top research university?" said trustee Tom Reilly. "I think the perception is it's more like Michigan and Wisconsin."
