We havent seen the Penn State Industrial engineering school yet, but the videos look very impressive. My son was accepted to both schools. Here is the situation, we are New York State residents and my son was given at $2500/yr Scholarship at UB, so the price difference is around $25k a year. UB from what I am told has the biggest and best engineering department in the SUNY system and my son might want to get an MBA to help enhance his resume. UB has a 5 year IE/MBA program which Penn State does not, although he could minor in Business. He is also waiting to hear from Binghamton but his acceptance isn't assured. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Personally, I do not believe PSU is worth the extra 100k over four years. I obviously do not know your financial situation though. PSU is ranked higher, but UB is still well regarded. Who knows if your son will change his major anyways?

DD attends BU as Chem E major currently a Jr, she has had positive experiences: TA’s, accepted to 2 summer REU (research experiences), currently working in lab. She was also accepted to Penn State but the price diff was not worth it and she also received a scholarship to BU. Her BF is an electrical eng major and has also had similar positive experiences and opportunities at BU.

What are the reasons for Penn State? Rankings do not seem to be all that much different (and Buffalo is sometimes higher in industrial engineering rankings), so there must be other reasons to even consider spending an extra $100,000.

Really the only other reason would maybe be that more recruiters come to Penn State because its a bigger, more well known school.

Penn State will be too expensive…If your son gets into Binghamton then that should be number 1 on the list, if not just goto Buffalo. Penn State does have more prestige than both but not worth OOS price.

If prestige *in major/i is of concern, then Buffalo ~= Penn State > Binghamton.
