Forgive me if this topic has been covered ad infinitum already; I did several searches and just couldn't come up with anything! :)
We'd love to take a quick overnighter to NYC this summer to see at least one show, but our last name is not "Warbucks" or "Trump," and so the price of things is an issue for us (as it no doubt is for most of you out there!:))
Can anyone suggest a relatively inexpensive but clean and safe hotel within walking distance of the theater district?
I realize "inexpensive" is a relative term when it comes to NY. Bring on the suggestions, please! :)

Radio city apartments. If they have a special on, it's a real deal. If not, it's still less expensive than many and very clean, safe, etc. This last weekend we also saw a Comfort Inn while we were walking around (but don't know costs). RCApts is good because you can save money on meals (their rooms have kitchenettes). For those who don't care about eating out, but want to spend money on show tickets, it's a good arrangement. My two cents.

Chrism, thanks so much! I will go online and check the Radio City Apts out. I have never heard of them (which isn't surprising, as I am not -- unfortunately! -- a regular visitor to NYC!). The last time we spent several nights in the city, we stayed at a shabby but serviceable HoJo's near the theater district. Not fancy, but clean enough and within walking distance of all the theaters. One of my biggest concerns is having to pay a lot for parking at a hotel, which I am guessing is unavoidable if we bring the car. We usually go up and back by bus (all in one day) and that eliminates concern over parking.
Any other suggestions, all you regular travellers?

We just got back from staying there. The kitchen was a big help in keeping expenses down. (Be sure to get one with a full fridge and not the under-the-counter fridge.) The only drawback we faced was that there wasn't a doorman, which meant lugging our luggage up several steps to get in the front door. Other than that, the place was clean and safe. And very convenient. It's on 49th Street between 6th and 7th.

Check the NYC hotel specials on Travelzoo (website).

I once heard of someone who drove to NYC, parked at LaGuardia, and took a cab to their hotel. They said it was cheaper parking at the airport than at the hotel. Don't know if that's true, but it might be worth looking into.

We've stayed in Jersey City. Taken a PATH train in (train an easy walk from hotel). Parking was around $10 per day at Double tree.

Try the Travel Inn at 515 W. 42nd Street. The rooms are large by NY standards and it's clean & affordable plus they offer free parking.

Comfort Inn Midtown (not to be confused with Comfort Inn Manhattan) is just a block from Times Square. Nothing fancy (who's going to spend much time in their hotel room when you're in NYC!), but clean, very reasonable, and even includes a full breakfast! For reviews and rankings for most every hotel in the country, go to tripadvisor.com. Since it's full of reliable information, we use it a lot as a starting point, but then usually book on each hotel's own website.

NMR, for something within walking distance of the theatre district, and relatively inexpensive, I'd recommend the Edison. It's right at Times Square, has a great (and famous) coffee shop which is often inhabited by actors, is clean, and safe.

There are often great deals to to be had at the Hilton Doubletree Times Square- which have small kitchenettes and the seccurity and quiet are wonderful. Check out their web site ande join the "club" which provide additional savings. Once you are on their "list". they send out mailings with real savings on them!

I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas about slightly longer stays. My d was just notified of her acceptance to the Circle in the Square summer program. Now she's trying to find housing for the 6 weeks she's there. Any ideas about longer-term stay options would be greatly appreciated!...... thanks...

We just returned from New York. D spent hours dancing at Broadway Dance Center and so I had hours to read their bulletin boards. They have a large board outside their locker room listing rooms to sublet, roommates needed for long or short term, etc. If someone is going to BDC, they could check the board. Most of the listings are posted by dancers or theater people. I don't know if the BDC staff would be willing to read you some of the listings. If I was still there, I would have been glad to do it.

BDC will post a notice for looking for a sublet or roomate, so will STEPS on Broadway. Maybe the theatre schools have the same set up. Call and ask for the fax numbers and see if they have a place to post notices. Also there is a website for sublet.com which matches people looking for short term rentals in the city.

Craigslist.com is a great place to find short term sublets.

I hear that the YMCAs in New York (apparently, there are several branches) rent out rooms by the week, and they are not expensive. I think there is also something called the Parkside Evangeline, which rents rooms to girls.

With the help of another very nice member here, I found this:

It lists various rooms for rent, including those for women and men only. Good luck!

Check out hotwire.com for good hotel deals. In April we were able to stay at the Westin on 42nd Street, a four star hotel, for 130.00 instead of 279.00! Seems like the prices drop the closer to your stay you are booking. They don't give you the name of the hotel - just "Four Star Hotel in Times Square" - once you book, then you find out which hotel it is. Before you book you do get info on the hotel as well as its rating on tripadvisor. You can choose areas of town in which you want to stay - for close proximity to the theatres, choose both Times Square and Midtown-Central. We're going in July and prices now for three and four star hotels are generally in the 140.00-160.00 price range.

And NotMamaRose, That Howard Johnsons on 8th Ave is now a Hampton Inn - in case you were trying to find it again! And the Days Inn nearby on 8th is now a Hilton Garden Inn. There is a new Econolodge in the area but it doesn't look to be much cheaper than it's neighbors.

Have fun!
