Info for those already admitted and assumed to be getting scholarship info

For all those that have gotten acceptance letters and (we assume) will get interview notifications, I do have the dates for the Explore USC on-campus interviews/visits so you can probably prepare in advance. I got this info from a prospective host's info meeting (although don't count on me being a host; my suitemates are so raucous that they'll probably scare any prospective students away from USC ;))

Arrival is around 5:15-5:30pm (subject to change) and there will be dinner at either EVK or Parkside, followed by some evening activites with your host. The interviews are in the morning the second day, and you are welcome to visit a few classes before lunch and then depart. (These are all overnight stays in a student host's dorm):

Thursday - February 23 to Friday - February 24 (Trustee 1)
Monday - February 27 to Tuesday - February 28 (Trustee 2)
Thursday - March 2 to Friday - March 3 (Presidential 1)
Monday - March 6 to Tuesday - March 7 (Presidential 2)
Thursday - March 9 to Friday - March 10 (Presidential 3)

good luck to everyone that gets the scholarship ; D

Thanks for the info.

I have heard numbers (Trustee: ~ 100-125, Presidential: ~175-200).
Also heard that they invite close to twice what they approve.
Anyone heard the same, different, other info?

Entering Undergraduates
USC administers 17 prestigious scholarship programs ranging from $500 to full tuition. Unlike loans, scholarships do not have to be paid back. They are awarded based on academic excellence, leadership, service, talent, and the criteria detailed below. Recipients must enroll full time (16 units each semester) and maintain a cumulative GPA at USC of 3.0 or higher. If an interview is required, candidates will be contacted. Selection for an interview does not imply the awarding of a scholarship or admission to USC. Meeting application requirements and minimum criteria does not guarantee that you will receive a particular scholarship. Recipients of our scholarships often exceed the minimum criteria.

Trustee

Amount: Full tuition (approximately $32,000)

Number of awards: 100-120

Selection Criteria: For entering freshmen only. Candidates are selected by USC faculty and staff from an extremely competitive international pool. Applicants take the most demanding curriculum and achieve at the highest level. Average SAT and ACT scores are in the top 1-2% of all students nationwide who take these examinations. In addition to academic criteria, candidates' talent, involvement, and leadership are considered.

Application Process: Freshmen must submit a completed 2006 Undergraduate Application with required materials by December 10, 2005. Interview required for final candidates. Candidates will be contacted by the Office of Admission in February if they have been selected to interview.

Notification: By April 1, 2006

Presidential

Amount: Half tuition (approximately $16,000)

Number of awards: 150

Selection Criteria: For entering freshmen only. Candidates are selected by USC faculty and staff from an extremely competitive international pool. Applicants take the most demanding curriculum and achieve at the highest level. Average SAT and ACT scores are in the top 2-3% of all students nationwide who take these examinations.
So, 2230 SAT, where does that put me?

Where would S's 2340 put him, with 3.9 unweighted and national AP scholar, other contests and awards?

Would they look at my Jan retake?

I turned in my application in early January -- definitely not by the scholarship deadline -- and I got my acceptance in the mail on Friday. Based on this, it would seem like who has or hasn't heard back doesn't have to do with potential scholarships. Or is it possible to be considered despite a late application? I have no clue. That's just my two cents.

thanks sooo much for the info, redski!

do you have any idea how many people are coming? (in other words, how many people are being considered for merit scholarships)

dcc3, stop scaring me. = )

Here is a quick summary of what Explore USC was like for me. I'm not sure if it is the same this year, but this is what happened last year.

Arrive around 11 and get checked in. Put luggage in admissions building and get free t-shirt and some bagels/donuts.

Go to welcome assembly program, where everyone introduces themselves and the band plays a bit.

Go to specific seminars with parents. I went to the Thematic Options one, where they gave us candy.

Take a walking tour of campus with other interviewees.

Eat lunch at some point in time.

All of the scholars meet up again and split from their parents for the night. The parents go to a nice dinner while the students get matched with their hosts. There was also a question and answer session here.

Get luggage and bring to room, and eat dinner at either EVK or Parkside.

Go to ground zero for a concert/comedy show/a capella group.

Rush back to dorm to watch whatever TV show is on that night (for me it was the OC, which I had never seen before).

At this point what you do is really up to the discretion of your host. I went out to coffee and got answers to a bunch of questions.

Go to sleep.

Wake up and prepare for interview. You receive the time for your interview in a packet you get during check-in.

Go to breakfast at either EVK or Parkside.

Go interview.

Attend a class. They give you a list of possibilities, and you can also go to any of the classes your host will sneak you into.

Meet up with parents for lunch. Hear some pretty speeches.

Go home and sleep!

Do accepted NMF's, who get 1/2 tuition scholarships from USC also need to interview?

It depends on the scholarship they are offered.

is the interview required?

how many candidates for presidential and trustee?

and how many are actually chosen?

yes, it's required; idk how many candidates; 100-120 for trustee and 150 for presidential

how many ppl are they choosing the trustee candidates from?
is it around 300? because if it is more than 1500 or something... then getting it should be kinda hard...

^ I was wondering the same thing. 4 people (including myself) have been accepted to USC from my school, so I'm curious how many people there are total...

We've got six total from my school (unsure about who is up for trustee vs. presidential). Will this make it harder for more than one of us to get one?

Possibly, but I'm not sure. Several people got scholarships from my high school. About 300 people interview for trustee, I believe.
