I will be an IS major when I attend in the fall. Just wanted to know what people think of the IS program at CMU? I know CMU is known to have a very strong IS program. How does the small size of the school affect classes and interactions?

I also want to take a language on the side (German) and work my way to obtaining a fluency certificate. How easy is it to fit such a thing?

The IS program here is good. You can check the CMU website for salary statistics - they even explicitly indicate where graduates got jobs and/or went to graduate school.

Taking a language is perfectly fine - in fact the IS program is incredibly double major friendly. Check the modern languages website for specific languages (they do teach German at CMU). You have to take H&SS GenEds anyway, so taking a language would serve to fill up some of those.

The major is “small” but IS classes are generally full. Later on you’ll enter into projects with teammates. Most of the classes you take won’t actually be IS core courses though (I think there are 5 main core courses, 2 are project courses…you’ll probably have a couple other IS mini courses…and of course they offer IS electives)

If you want to start to learn more about the major now you can actually read over the content areas within the IS major (you’ll choose one eventually). Visit the IS website and read up on the curriculum.

Thanks for the response Tony. Yeah I’ve taken a look at the classes that IS majors take and they seem very interesting. I want to know more the reputation of IS program and IS students amongst CMU people. For example, what kind of people are in the program? Also, I want to focus more on the technology aspect of IS rather than business theory.
