I'm applying for 2010-2011 for grade 9. I've already received packets from/submitted inquiries for (be prepared for the never ending list):Emma Willard,Exeter, Middlesex, SPS, Mercersburg, Tabor, Governor's, Taft,/Andover,NMH, Williston, berkshire, and about abt a bazillion others that never came.

At the moment I'm really interested in Taft, NMH, Exeter, and Mercersburg.

I'm really into Humanities, especially English and visual arts. I'm a 3 sport athlete: Soccer/5 yrs, Cross Country/2 years, Track/1 yr(will have 2 nxt yr). interested in MUN, paper, and such.

could u give me advice on what you know about these schools and the admissions process.
my family is really uninvolved so it would be very useful.

You’ll probably want to try VERY HARD to persuade your family, parents at least, because applying to elite boarding schools is a difficult and strenuous process, and the parents are required on many things, such as the parent statement, HUGE financial aid application (if applicable), interview etc. You don’t want to try to keep up with your current school, doing all those activities, and at the same time worrying about applying to another, more prestigious school. You are likely to get burned out (and I don’t want anyone on CC to get burned out).

Milton has great creative writing, Andover is considered Exeter’s “humanities” counterpart. (Exeter is considered more “math/science”). Loomis is also considered an artsy school, but it’s academic rigor is (arguably) not on par with the “HADES” schools (Hotchkiss, Andover, Deerfield, Exeter, St. Paul’s).

When you say “together”, do you mean they teach it simultaneously? Like, I’m going to english-history class… or just the same teacher or same class, but at different times.

I’ve heard a lot of people say Exeter has a great school newspaper.

@ex:when I say ‘uninvoled’ I meant they want me to get out of my current school but they just like wont throw themselves into it and be as helpful as I’d like. I’m kind of doing it all on my own right now and its already pretty stressful.

@lemons:i really like andover, but my sis goes to exeter and she says that their humanities are phenomenal so since she kind of goes there so i’m inclined to put her opinion over yours. also their paper is fantastic but i don’t rreally know how it stands up to other papers. o yes, and i am considering loomis but i just forgot to mention it. i didnt really like milton from what i saw/heard of it to close to boston for my comfort. lol

@gallaghergirl: yes what do you mean “together”?

they have a class called humanities which is when u learn english and stuff but while u are say reading a book or something u look at the time period of when it is written, what important events happened during that time and sometimes u look at artwork from the period…so it’s sort of a combined class of history and language arts
i think they fit really well together and it’s really interesting…did that make any sense?

…I find that awfully lame. I mean it sounds good and all but… its like “hmmm, lets give math science and whatever their own thing but lets just group english arts and history together!” lameee

Oh haha they do the english and history together at my current school, then. It’s really not that bad. It’s just that when you’re learning about, say, Ghana, in history, and learning about creative writing in english, they’ll find a creative writing piece about Ghana, or by a Ghanian, in the time frame of what you’re learning in history. The two topics relate, but they don’t interchange. BUT THEN AGAIN, this is my current school, not boarding school. So it might not be the same.

Yeah, almost all boarding schools are great all-around, so Exeter may still have a very-very-very outstanding humanities program, it just might have a very-very-very-very outstanding math. So I’m not saying the humanities are bad there, as it is FARRRRRR from!

NMH does the humanities thing as well. Freshman year is Religious Studies and Freshman English; Sophomore Year is World History and World Religions; Junior Year is American Lit. and US History. My son enjoys it. Great school. Good soccer team…5 NEPSAC Class A soccer titles, most recently in 2006. Advanced to quarterfinals in 2007. Looks like a strong team this year as well. State of the art track facility (new in 2003); 3 new turf fields (2008) and 2 new grass soccer fields (?2005/6). MUN also seems strong…my son does not participate so I can’t give details. Very strong in the arts…you’ve got to see the brand new “RAC” (Rhodes Arts Center) if you have an interest in visual arts.

Its not that it doesn’t work or whatever, its just I have a not so positive feeling about it thats somewhere between indifference and …idk. its hard to describe. im just not gun-ho abt it.

How long did it take for you to recieve your inquiries? I submitted some as early as three weeks ago and none of them have came yet. I’m starting to think my mother is hiding them from me (she’s not too high on me going to boarding school).

It depends on the school. Some of them came in 2-3 days( like Berkshire or Deerfield) but others I inquired to have still not come and I don’t even remember how long ago I inquired to them. I think it just takes a while for some, like I inquired to LC in, idk, July and I just got it in the mail today. But I also inquired to NMH and Andover forever ago and no sign of them.

My inquiries have been coming fairly quickly. I’ve inquired to many schools in the past 2 weeks and so far i’ve recieved Emma Willard, Andover, Middlesex, and Deerfield.
The MX admissions person actually wrote on the letter they sent. I thought that was a nice touch.
I haven’t recieved anything from NMH or Concord. Or a lot of other schools I inquired to but have forgotten heh.

Rad-in-Plaid - Andover generally takes a long time to send inquiries compared to other schools, so it’s not just you (don’t worry!). Mine took 3-4 weeks to arrive, compared to the 5 days it took for most other schools to send their packets. They probably get reaaaally backlogged with all the requests they receive. :P
