Hello.
I am attending a public four-year university this fall and I have already decided I want to transfer, because the program offered in the college I am going to isn’t particularly strong. Therefore, I am in the process of coming up with the list of universities to apply to as a transfer student after Freshman Year. I want to continue with my Major, Chemical Engineering.
I am considering a lot of colleges and have been researching about transfer acceptance rates and requirements (especially prerequisite courses). Every university I’ve come up with seems reasonable enough to apply to, because the prerequisite courses doesn’t pose a threat to my application. I have three so far: University of Minnesota – Twin Cities, University of Texas at Austin, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and each of these only require a few courses (U of M requires Calculus I and II).
So, the prerequisite courses for the University of Michigan are worrying:
-Math: College Level Calculus I, II, III and Differential Equations. (Math, 115, Math 116, Math 215, and 216)
-Physics: Calculus-based Physics with labs (PHY 140, PHY 141, PHY 240, PHY 241L)
-Chemistry: General College Chemistry with lab (CHEM 130/125L/126L or CHEM 210/211L)
-Computing: Computer Programming, C++ preferred. (ENGR 101 or EECS 183) Some departments will accept other programming languages. See a list of other accepted programming languages.
- English: English Composition (ENG 125)
As it demands the transfer student to cover until Differential Equations, I would assume that won’t happen until the fourth semester, so my questions are:
- If I don’t meet these requirements, will I be completely rejected?
- Does that mean they don’t accept sophomore transfers, but only juniors in the College of Engineering?
If you could enlighten me a little bit more about the transfer process for this college I would be grateful.
Have a wonderful day.
Many students actually finish all these within freshmen year or by the end of the first semester in sophomore year. So it is not that they don’t take sophomore transfer. My D finished all these (plus other electives) courses before sophomore year (thanks to the AP credits and summer class), and yet she need 2.5 more years (3.5yr total) to graduate with ChemE major. If you need 4 semester to complete all these, you may need an extra semester to graduate unless you have CHE230 and CEH330 equivalent credits by the time you transfer. See the sample schedule at the link below:

I am not sure but chemical engineering’s requirment may include organic chem not just chem 1 lecture & lab and chem 2 lab. Computer science asks linere algebra. You need to double check coe transfer prerequisites site. Best idea is applying with completed prerequisites but some people apply in progress. In last year thread someone admitted diff while equation was in progress.
ChemE does require org chem 1&2 and Calc 3&4, but OP is talking about transfer requirement, not pre-req requirement. One can take those after the transfer.
Cross campus student transfer admission requirement differ from external transfer ones. Also you need to check department specific requirement for transfer admission. Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering looks not ask Cal3& diff equation. If you really want to apply after freshman, apply there and transfer to chemE again after the fransfer. If denied after frashman, wait until complete diff equation in your original school and retry to Chemical E.
To get in after freshman, I think your high school gpa may be considered with college one.
That is interesting, I am planning to graduate in 4 years. And regarding the summer classes, how does that work? Do I get to take additional classes during summer? Because I want to fulfill all the requirements before applying or while I am in the process.

@ejjung38 I just want to transfer to another school after freshman year. But for this college, prerequisite courses seems to be very demanding (I mean they ask many more than other schools). Am I guaranteed denial if I apply without the prerequisites?
As a transfer they want you to graduate within two years of your transfer in. UMich has an incredibly demanding engineering school so I don’t think what they are asking for is unusual for an institution of UMich’s tier. As for acceptance/denial you should email the person in charge of transfer admissions to find out. I don’t think you’re going to find a solid answer here.
@existential12 Thank you for replying. I understand what you’re saying but I still think it is a little bit excessive, considering other top tier schools’ requirements. They are basically demanding transfer students to transfer in Junior year, but I guess they are ensuring the quality of students at the institution.
@AnonymousKnight My D took the Physics 240 equivalent at a CC over the summer. You just need to make sure UMich accept the credits from that school. Does your current school offer summer classes?
@billcsho I think the university I am going to does. So, basically I can take some other classes from the prerequisite courses during summer? That would work, I think.
