INSIDER INFO! Alumni scholarships

i just came back from my alumni scholars club meeting. new info:

UCLA will be inviting more candidates than previous years to State Finals this year to compete for the $12,000 scholarships! (~55 total)

i have a feeling district and area interviews should've started or will be starting soon, because we're calling scholarship winners starting march 28, and state finals is on april 16-17.

anybody doing this?

Erm...I'm a little confused about this. They say to keep March 19-20 and 26-27 open for interviews and obviously 19-20 is coming up pretty fast. I haven't heard anything from them...so does this mean I already did not make the first cut?

I didn't apply, and honetly - because they expected too many essays while being non-definitive about anything. At least with UCB, when I hd a question, I received an answer within a day actually. UCLA alumni NEVER replied, lol.

thanks kfc4u!!! totally appreciate the info! i hope filling out that horrendously long app pays off :)

shinseki12, perhaps youre gonna interview for the 26-27 weekend. i mean last year, i interviewed on saturday and got a call on sunday of the same weekend.... so if the interview is 26 or 27, get a call from 28... makes sense. so dont rule out anything. good luck

however, i think the alumni don't call if you don't make the first cut. if you don't get a call by april 7 (our last phone call date), then that would mean that you didn't make it.

they started informing already. got a call today (right before a calc test, eep) and my interview's set for this saturday.

just curious...fakeplants...where in cali do you live?

ok good to know fakeplants got a call. i knew "i have a feeling district and area interviews should've started or will be starting soon"

around san gabriel valley, an hour and a halfish from ucla. near where the majority of the pomona freeway runs.

i got a call too. my interview is saturday (i'm from the huntington beach area, oc). so like what happens now? i get an interview for this.. and then? i'm so confused.

This is your District/Area interview. You're going to do individual interviews (roughly 20-30 minutes), and you'll be competing against other Alumni scholarship applicants from around the same area. The number of scholarships awarded depends on how competitive your area is, but typically, the Top 3 interviewees get the $4000 scholarship, and the Top 2 among those get to move on to the next round, which should be your regional interview, and the very top from all the regional interviews will move onto State Finals at UCLA.

So for now, do your best at your upcoming interview.

fakeplants, i can probably guess which schools your competition is gonna come from since im from around the same area

i know someone on the panel and they're reading the next batch of essays this weekend...im pretty sure everyone who qualifies should know sometime next week.

this is probably a stupid question, but as i only applied to uc, i didn't have to do any interviews prior to this, so...whatever :P

1) what categories of questions should i expect?
2) how EXACTLY should i dress - i'm assuming powersuit or at least knee-length skirt, heels, etc.?

No call... :(

Thanks kfc4u. The guy who called me said there were 320 applicants from my area and they chose 8 to be interviewed on saturday. So if I am lucky enough to be one of the top three of the 8, then I will get $4000? awesome! and how about in regionals? do i get more if i make it to regionals or even state? thanks! I will try to do my best.

i want to know the same as apsara...what kind of questions!?!

hmm i dont know if im allowed to post up last year's questions. last year's interview was overall relatively short, about 4 to 5 questions, so around 20-30 minutes. just make sure you explain your answers well because there aren't that many questions. they're more creativity/personality based questions.

i.e. if you could be someone for one day, who would you be and why ;) ;)

oh yea, do some research on UCLA if you want. don't be like me and ask stupid questions about their dorms when i clearly could've done my own research about it (they give you an opportunity to ask them questions about ucla in the end)

grumptious, yes if you come in top 3 in your region, you should get the $4000 scholarship. top 2 you should advance. i'm not sure if that's directly to state finals or if there's another round, since state finals this year is earlier than usual, i'll have to check on that and how much additional money you get each round (if any?).

holy crap those are scary questions......crap. im screwed. so im guessing this isnt an interview like "what major and why?" kinda thing? ah. crap.

kfc4u, do u know on average how many kids are invited to each interview thing in your respective city?

aw crap.

grumptious says there's 8 prospective students getting interviewed at his/her area. last year at my area, it was about the same, maybe around 8 or 9 also (3 of them were from my high school and all 3 of us got the scholarship!!!!!!). but other than that, i cant give an average since its the alumni that take care of the actual interview.

last year at the alumni scholarship, if i remember correctly, there was nothing about academics or ucla on the questions. mostly an interview for character. seems like alumni scholarships are focused on leadership and extracurriculars/volunteerism, because most of the other alumni scholars that i have met are leaders, involved on campus, or do community service, or a combo of the above.

on another note, UCR's alumni scholarship interview was somewhat similar too... or at least they also had questions on character/personality.

don't worry, you'll be fine. =)

*tip: if you've never interviewed before, i suggest you get a teacher or someone to do a mock interview with you. you always improve on the 2nd interview, so you want to make sure your bad interview is used up on the mock one.
