instate rates for out of state student

does anyone know of any universities/colleges that give instate tuition or tuition cut backs to out of state students? even if requiring a certain GPA, SAT, ACT, etc.

Read here. Lots of links. One is specifically abou your question…but you absolutely need to check for current info on each college website. Some of the information hasn’t been updated for a while.

Lots of info on merit awards too.

There’s actually a old thread about this: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/1505285-automatic-out-of-state-tuition-waivers.html

I know Texas State University does, if that link doesn’t mention them already. Requirements are top 25% rank, and 1400 CR+M (old SAT) or 32 ACT.

Florida State U will give IS tuition to higher stat OOS, plus another $2400 per year freshman merit scholarship, my daughter received the waiver and scholarship with 2100 SAT(1420 CR+M) /32 ACT 3.8 U/W GPA, but there is no specific cutoff scores posted on the FSU website.

Clemson U also has decent merit for OOS, it does vary with stats.

What year are you in high school? What are your test scores?

Be aware that transfer students get little/no merit. Also, UCs are very expensive OOS and won’t give OOS aid.

am currently a high school student living in Texas but I would like to attend school in California. I had lived there for most of my life moving to Texas a few years ago. The CC in my area here in Texas has been known to be a bit flaky when transferring out of state credits and taking courses needed to transfer. I had considered going there for 2 years then transferring to a UC school but knowing people who have gone to school in different states have had to scrap all their credits and start again because of their credits not counting. I would like to avoid this by going to community college out of state and transferring which also may give me a better chance with going to a UC school. I'm not sure if it is worth it knowing that community college is double, even triple (depending on the school) for out of state. Currently in high school I have roughly a 3.5 GPA which Isn't good enough for most UC schools overall especially the ones I have interest in. I was thinking about Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, California. Is community college out of state worth it? Or should I just take my chances with the instate community college? Maybe even apply to a few Universities and see which I get into? Thank you!

Since you didn’t go to high school in Calif, you can’t get instate rates.

Presumably that’s why the OP is asking the question in the thread now @mom2collegekids

True. The bigger point, I think, is that if he wants the best aid/cost reduction, he has to get it as an incoming freshman.
